The Mark V Continental is the pinnacle of luxury in the ’70s. The car has enormous proportions and interior details to match. The seller notes this example has a functioning factory Cartier clock (chronometer) and excessively comfortable seats. Standard features for the Mark V included shag carpets and automatic climate control. There are loads of trim variations for these cars. Pucci, Givenchy, and Cartier all had their own editions of the car. This 47k mile Mark V is listed on craigslist in Redding, California for $12,500. Thanks to numskal for the tip.
This example is finished in baby blue with a beige vinyl top. The exterior appears to be in great condition with no apparent damage throughout. The seller notes that the car has been garage-kept which explains its like-new condition. The car features functional fender vents and a simulated spare tire carrier.
The interior is a color-matched baby blue throughout. The seats are finished in “Supple Pillow” leather which continues to the door panels. The interior appears to be in excellent condition considering the age of the car. Short shag carpeting covers the Mark V’s floor pans. The dash and steering wheel are finished in blue vinyl with wood accents. The cabin is roomy and ultra-luxurious, even by today’s standards.
A 400ci V8 sends power to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. The engine is said to have received a basic service recently. The seller also notes they installed new tires and a new exhaust. The car is clearly in terrific condition and needs no work. With only 47k miles, it has a ton of life left in it and the newest owner could easily drive and enjoy it without worry. If you are interested in owning this bold blue Mark V contact the owner via craigslist before it’s gone.
Nobody does robin 🐦 egg blue, like the Ford Motor Company.
Whenever I see one of these in the flesh, it reinforces just how l-o-n-g they are, specifically the hood. And just how cramped the interior is, relatively speaking. That said, they are quite the impressive sight and an example of their time. Cruise in style. Like Stan says, lots of Fords in this color in their day.
Anyone else remember meeting these on the freeway and seeing that piece of plastic trim flapping up and down in front of the grill? Ford finally fastened it down with a big plastic rivet if I recall correctly.
Truly a LAND YACHT. But the Faux convertible top and the 400 engine (only one available in79) are not as appealing as 78 MARKS and TOWN CARS. Happy Thanksgiving to ALL Barn Finders! I’m off to VERSAILLES 🏰 😉 in my Town Car! 🤣
I’m more interested in the ’40 Deluxe in the garage.
This car is the rarest of ALL the Mark V’s. It is the only one that was equipped with a 400ci V-8 engine, and front wheel drive. What a find!
It’s rear wheel drive, and why Ford didn’t stick a 460 in these, I’ll never know. The 400 is a slug in a car this big.
The 400 was in response to the second gas crunch. I was 14 when this car was made, but I seem to remember that the big V-8s were bad publicity, so they were dropped. I don’t remember if new emissions requirements also killed these engines.
Ford dropped the 460 in passenger cars, after 1978. And the article clearly states that the 400 provides power “to the front wheels.” 😳
I had a ’77 Mark V with the 460… sold it in 2004 when it wasn’t worth much unfortunately. The best I could do then was $2500 and it was in great condition, had about 75k miles on it …ugh. Last time I saw it it was sitting on the side of the road with its 4-ways on a couple yrs after I sold it. That was a sad day for me.
there never was a front wheel drive mark in 1979 all where rear wheel I had a 1978 mark bought it in 1980 same car as the 1977 and 1979 great cars
Man this would go great with my leisure suit and bell bottoms!
This does not remind me of the car, which appears to be a fine deal for someone, but the summer of 1977 when I returned to California near where I had lived for 4 years, hitchhiked from Mendocino County with a sign marked “Redding” so I could end up 70 miles to the north. I climbed the extinct, mystical volcano Mt Shasta after staying overnight in a cabin part way up. The next day was July 4. I made it almost to the top when it was getting dark. Since I was alone, I decided to slide down a snow-covered slope while sitting. I had new blue jeans on. They were white on the bottom afterwards. What a trip. Back east and to reality. Good memories.
You really have to wonder about what a car has, when the seller doesn’t understand the difference between something as obvious as front and rear wheel drive. Lincolns of this era were rear wheel drive only. I wonder what else about it is misunderstood ? If I had an oil well in my back yard I would love to own this !
According to Google this is a rear wheel drive. FWD was not an option.
Terrible years for smogged out ” Murican” crap. They didn’t start getting HP back until the Mustang 5.0’s in the 80’s when stuff started getting fun again. These are even wimpy by today’s standards with most V8’s being 300-500 hp. I’d even take 100 less HP if I could get 25 mpg in my truck, but the race won’t go backwards unless the gov’t pushes it. I only need the power when towing…
Sara, and anyone else. I googled a 1979 Lincoln Mark V and it is rear wheel drive.
These are rear wheel drive, not front wheel drive. I don’t care what the article says! It’s a rear wheel drive car.
Although I haven’t been there since 1985 Redding is my home town. Extremely dry hot summers and wet mildly cold winters. I never owned a Mark V but did own a 75 Mark IV. It was a great car. If you want to cruise in comfort these babies do it all day long. The color is eye catching. You better be ready to talk to a lot of people if you drive this one even to the grocery store. I love it.
God Bless America
This car has rear wheel drive.
You will never find a smoother riding car this side of a Rolls Royce than a Mark V. Lincoln nailed it.
had a 1978 and you are so right great road car longest hood I have ever had
Does anyone know if this car is FWD or RWD?
PLEASE do not answer.
Is there truly anyone who reads Barn Finds that doesn’t know this is RWD?
So, the author made a mistake, simmer down now.
Yeah simmer down
the engine is sitting ‘correctly’ in the car, hence ‘correct wheel drive’
Hey babe, have you seen my white belt and matching patent leather platform shoes?!
