47K Original Miles: 1988 Mazda RX7

This clean 1988 Mazda RX-7 is a low mileage specimen that remains in bone-stock condition and is part of the class of 1980s vehicles that is quickly rising in price as new collectors come into the fold. The seller notes that while the car is highly original, he doesn’t have the title for the vehicle. Still, I suspect this is a genuine survivor, as the bodywork looks extremely nice and the interior is mint. Still, this is a non-turbo version that tends to trade hands for less cash than its turbocharged sibling, so the asking price of $7,500 may be too steep for a non-runner. Find the Mazda here on craigslist and located in Fairfax, Virginia.

The FC chassis RX-7 suffers from the fate of being trapped between two excellent generations of a well-loved sports car. The FB RX-7 is the first generation model that was just universally loved for its lightweight and eager personality; the 90s version, known as the FD, was simply a gorgeous sports car that was almost borderline exotic in terms of appearance and performance. The FC, like this car, was neither excellent nor subpar – it was simply an evolution, but it also put on some weight and wasn’t nearly as raucous as the early models nor as polished as the later car. The convertible version was quite pretty, however, and I’ve seen strong values for those over the years.

Still, there’s no denying the appeal of an RX-7 survivor from any generation, and this example certainly fits that bill to a T. The interior is practically flawless, with absolutely mint cloth bucket seats and unmarked surfaces wherever you look, from the center console to the carpets. To me, this is one of the more appealing qualities of a survivor, as the drivetrain inevitably still needs work despite the low mileage, as this car does – but the passenger compartment can be given a light detailing and otherwise left alone. Running or not, the interior photo convinces me that this Mazda does indeed have under 50,000 original miles.

The engine bay houses a naturally-aspirated 13B engine, and as a 1988 model, it is considered a “Series 4” engine, which means it kicks out just under 150 horsepower. The later models got a nice boost to 160 in a non-turbo form, which makes those cars (particularly the convertibles) fairly desirable. The seller’s car doesn’t run due to the classic failed fuel pump, but I also wonder if  the gas tank has old fuel in it that needs to be drained out (or perhaps he’s attempted to start it and already clogged the filter.) Regardless, dropping the price to an even $5,000 might do wonders to encourage the sale of this survivor-grade RX-7.

Gone. $7500 wasn’t unreasonable. Half the price of that hideous Cadillac just profiled. Every car doesn’t have to be fast to enjoy it especially with a 5spd with a light clutch. Definitely a rare find, most I see are convertibles. Doesn’t need to be inspected in most states and you can insure it for under $250/yr.

Nice car but antique or otherwise in Louisiana you can’t insure anything for $250. If we could everybody would have one here.🖖🏼

Yes gone already. They might as well have advertised it for $10. $7,500 is pocket lint in this market

    Question
How do you not have title for a 1988 car? Other than losing it and needing to order one from the DMV I can’t think of a good reason other than illegal or improper ones.

Had an ’86 5-speed coupe. That car was great fun, quick, and handled well. The 13B engine was a sweetheart.
