50th Anniversary Monkey Bike: 2017 Honda Z50

We have seen a few Honda Z50 Monkey Bikes here on Barn Finds over the last few years but nothing as new as this 2017 Z50 Monkey Bike. This tiny bike can be found here on eBay in Port Washington New York and bidders have driven the price up to $7,100. And – are you ready for this? – the reserve hasn’t been met.

We don’t normally show vehicles as new as this 2017 Honda Monkey Bike here but this one is a bit different as it was made as a limited edition collectible. A great friend of mine just bought a new Honda Monkey Bike for his wife and kids to learn how to ride on a smaller bike. That one is a 125CC version, though, so it has quite a bit more power than Honda’s 49CC version does. Only 1,800 of the anniversary bikes were reportedly built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Z50.

There isn’t any mistaking this one for a 50th-anniversary Monkey Bike as it’s red and white as the original bike was back in 1967, and there are badges and decals, not to mention the classic black, white, and red tartan seat cover. Another instant collectible Honda 50 that we’ve seen a few of lately is the 1986 Z50RD Christmas Special bikes which are somewhat similar but are loaded with chrome.

This little bike is surprisingly modern and set up for road use much more than most of my oddball tiny motorcycles are, although most of mine have turn signals at least, not that I’d ever drive them on an actual road. The Z50 was nicknamed the Monkey Bike due to the weird monkey-like crouch that adult riders got into when they rode one. They’re small, weighing probably what I do and they’re under 3-feet tall with a 26-inch seat height.

The very cool Hello-Kitty-like Monkey logo helmet comes with the bike and they typically sell for just under $900, so there’s that. The seller doesn’t give us an engine photo but it should have Honda’s 49 CC four-stroke single-cylinder with 3.5 horsepower. This one has never been dealer prepped and with just 1.6-miles on it, I can’t imagine that it’s been started too often. Would any of you pay this much for a collectible Honda 50 or what else would you buy with this amount of cash?
