52K-Mile 1972 Ford Maverick

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Between the Ford Falcon and Ford Fairmont was the Ford Maverick. It was a somewhat sassy little car and the early examples were nice with smaller bumpers such as on this 1972 Ford Maverick two-door sedan. The brown color screams the 1970s to me which is perfect for this 1970s car. I want to dig out my white shoes and white belt just looking at this fantastic little car. The seller has it listed here on eBay in Chester, New York – let’s check it out.

This car looks really nice in the first photo but there appears to be a bit of difference between the left front fender and driver’s side door in the photo above. The seller says that this Maverick only has 52,000 miles on it, which is incredible after so many decades of being on the planet, and they think that it may have had paintwork at some point, but there is supposedly no bondo. It does have some rust, however, and the seller has provided a lot of photos showing just about every inch of this car, including the underside which has some heavy surface corrosion, and a new gas tank.

Speaking of Falcons and Fairmonts, both of those models were available in a station wagon body style but the Maverick was not. I just think that’s interesting, not that it’s an earth-shattering fun fact or anything. The Maverick came in a two-door and a four-door sedan, and also the Grabber model which was also a two-door. The Maverick was made from 1969 for the 1970 model year up until 1977.

The interior is beautiful and just plain cool, in my opinion. But, I’m the guy who at 6′-5″ tall rides around on a tiny Honda Motocompo so you have to take what I say is cool with a grain of salt. The checker pattern seat inserts look perfect as does the rest of the interior from what I can see. This Maverick is equipped with a three-speed automatic with a column shifter.

There is no 302 V8 here, this car is equipped, as a lot of Mavericks were, with Ford’s 200-cu.in. inline-six which had 91 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque. This car runs great, according to the seller, and with some cleaning up of the surface rust underneath and under the hood, this could be a real gem. Have any of you owned a Ford Maverick?

My small-town Ford dealer sold lots of basic, low-option Mavericks like this one. The exact option list sticks in my mind: automatic, power steering, AM radio, whitewalls, Accent Group (bright trim and wheel covers). Made for an attractive, low-cost economy car. Even in brown.

When a big-bumper Maverick appears on Barn Finds, we all wish for the small-bumper versions. So here you go. I hope the buyer enjoys it for what it is and how it represents its time.

    Listing gone.

    Thanks Scotty.

Friends had one in Anchorage in the mid-70s. I was amazed at the deadness of the controls… steering was slow, brakes lazy, woozy suspension, not a good car unless you wanted no involvement whatsoever with your transportation module.
Looked better than the Duster, though.

Reminds me of my childhood. A neighbor was a doctor but obviously not a car guy. He had this car in blue, and afterwards a series of similar nondescript cars. I imagine that he was blissfully unaware of what a disappointing era he was in automotive wise.

Hard to fault the interior in that condition, other than to wish for just about any other color (there was both light tan and a darker brown on offer which would’ve looked good with metallic brown).

Let me tell you my Phyllis Maher stories.

Phyl was an airhead friend of my mother (a recent immigrant from the Emerald Isle). She bought a new early 70s Maverick (light blue exterior, 6 cylinder, 3 spd auto on the column). It was the first car I rode in that did not have roll down rear side windows. 1. My mother asked her what kind of deal she got (from Mohawk Ford) on her new Maverick. She said she asked the salesman how much that car cost and she paid the price he named. 2. She got lost once and decided to follow a car because “the driver looked like he knew where he was going”. 3. She got “trapped” on the inside lane of a traffic circle and went around and around for some time before she finally was able to get in the outside lane and exit (taking the right exit thankfully). I swear these things actually happened. That’s all I got folks, although she probably had other “adventures” that I never heard of or have forgotten with the passage of time.

yes I had one of the first ones built in 1969 as a 1970 model only difference between them and the actual 1970 model was the ignition. on mine it was on the dash after that they moved it to the steering column for the real 1970s

My Dad also had “69” Maverick with the switch on the dash, Blue with blue based interior,200 six cylinder,C4 automatic, std steering and brakes.Chrome exterior trim package with full wheel covers. Good working, attractive smaller car, but they sure rusted badly in Atlantic Canada.

As an 18 year old kid, I bought a new 1970 Maverick, trading in a 1960 Falcon on the deal. 6cyl auto. Black Jade Green color. Out the door for $2100. 3 year loan with payment of $77 per month. Wish I had it today

I have a good friend who had a Maverick. He made 3 payments on it, came out from Church service one Sunday morning and it was gone. Someone stole it from the parking lot. Then about 15 years later the Police found it. Unfortunately it was stripped, motor, trans., wheels. brakes, and doors all gone.

Owned a 71 Grabber with the 302 and A/T. Flat-foot it and that thing would scortch rubber, even a chirp when it dropped into 3rd. Everything was great until that first turn… hitting the brakes, the weight transfer from that V8 would lock up the rear wheels but you still had the fronts under control. Mostly.

The car was very light in the ass mine came off the ground at 95 miles an hour , the shape of the car was more like a wing

Probably the Hondo folding scooter, might. maybe go faster than this crate.
With 91 HP, this would have literally crawled up the many hills where I grew up. I’m sure i got stuck behind a few ! lol

They did fine, just like the Falcons and Mustangs before them. The diff gears made up for the low HP. Granted, you weren’t going to win many drag races with it !

My spinster Great Aunt had one, a 1970, six, stick, no power anything and a radio. She traded in her ’67 Mustang on it. I never forgave her.

I have a toy model of this car in the same color in 1/25th scale. I don’t remember the details but Ford was running a promotion on the Maverick where they would send the toy car to you for free.

In high school in the 80s there was a white one of these for sale in my neighborhood and I wanted it soooo bad, but didn’t make enough from my paper route to buy it. There is something so pleasing about these and their simple, yet creative styling. The 200ci I6 is no big powerhouse, but very, very reliable if maintained.

I didn’t get a chance to see this before the ad disappeared. I wonder how much it went for? Nowadays I’m much more into 80s cars, but I’d certainly enjoy a decent Maverick to add to the collection. In fact I’d like to find one with the 6 cyl and 3 speed on the tree. Have to watch for another one. Hope the new owner enjoys this car!!

The advertising for these mentioned the ease of servicing them. “Simple and economical”. But of course around ’74 or so more belts, hoses and what not sprung up under the hood to meet EPA regs, so there went the serviceability.

There’s not really too much in the line of emissions stuff in any old Maverick ; 1970 emission stuff is minimal, and they were still easy to work on.

That Maverick has had some paint work on the fenders and the nameplates are too high.
We had a 72 Maverick that looked great and worked great. It had more features than the one shown, but still the 200 CIP six. The 72 was the last clean looking Maverick before the “bumpers”. It was a step down from the 66 Galaxie 500 2 door, but as a young person, I appreciated the fact that it was better on gas. Put in an 8track and was good to go.

When my father saw the first year Maverick two-door he thought it looked just like a Henry-J.

Does anyone else see a resemblance?

That interior sure looks like my Pinto Pony’s.

I’ve seen people put that many miles on a 3 year old car! People drive the wheels off their cars these days.
