52K-Mile Luxury Survivor: 1978 Cadillac Eldorado

Mediterranean Blue Firemist is such a beautiful color, although now that I say that, vehicle colors are such a subjective thing. At the very least, it’s an exotic-sounding name, and that’s perfect for what was an exotic car at one time: a 1978 Cadillac Eldorado. The seller has this gorgeous front-wheel drive survivor listed here on eBay in Utica, Michigan, and they’re asking $32,995, or you can make an offer.

With just over 52,000 miles, this Eldorado is barely broken in yet, but there is at least one cosmetic issue that I noticed on the 200+ photos (!) the seller has uploaded to their listing: the color-matched wheel covers show some fading or other paint issues. Otherwise, I don’t really see many flaws anywhere on or in this 19-foot-long car. The proportions are 99.9% perfect, in my opinion, a long hood and a short or shorter rear deck. While they made convertibles until the end of 1976, they never made a four-door sedan version. I wonder what that may have looked like… hmmm… No, scratch that, ha.

I get a Toronado vibe from this rear 3/4 photo for some reason, maybe because we’ve seen many more Toronados than Eldorados of this vintage. This is a ninth-generation Eldorado, and they were made from 1971 through 1978. The next generation would be 20 inches shorter and several hundred pounds lighter, but still quiet and luxurious. The first thing I look for on these decades-old GM cars is the bumper filler material, and it looks like new here, both front and back.

There appears to be a small crack in the bottom left corner of the padded dash near the wiper controls area, and is that a brown steering wheel cover? Also, the woodgrain on the top of the horn hub area appears a little worn, but otherwise, things look nice inside. Those seats, though, wow. There isn’t much lumbar support, and this car would have given a ride like lying on a waterbed on a cloud on top of ballbearings, or somethin’. I drove many of them as a teenager when I parked and washed cars at a medical building parking garage. The back seat looks like new, as does the trunk.

The super clean engine compartment is where a 425-cu.in. OHV V8 lives. It would have had 180 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque passing through a THM-425 automatic, powering the front wheels. A 13-second 0-60 time and 13 miles a gallon isn’t exactly the best of all worlds, numbers-wise, but riding-wise, and arriving-in-style-wise, you’d have a hard time going wrong with this car. They have it priced between Hagerty’s #2 excellent and #1 Concours values, but I’d think a #2 value may be closer to reality. Any thoughts on this cool blue Eldorado?

First off……. WOW!!!!! Ok, now that we got that out of the way… Absolutely gorgeous Eldorado. And the last year for this generation. What a gem. Beautiful blue. I remember the color keyed wheel covers, I always liked them. Great color combination too with the white interior and vinyl top. I’m with Scotty, first thing I’m looking at is those bumper fillers. I’d probably lose the brown steering wheel cover. I’m wondering if the steering wheel may be cracked? And Scotty the 4 door is unique. There wouldn’t have been anything else like it on the road.

Ha, thanks, Dave! The four-door is a little too super fly’ish with that landau rear door. Maybe I’ll give that another shot.

Scotty, if it is Superflyish, you’d need the fake Rolls Royce grill, and maybe those huge headlights!!!!
        Oh!!!! And…. Fuzzy dice!!!!

If you’re going to give it four doors, the rears have to be coach.
