The Oldsmobile Super 88 was a combination of the 88 and 98 series. It shared its wheelbase, length, and platform with the entry-level 88 but had the engine specifications of the 98 (also spelled out Eighty-Eight and Ninety-Eight). If you wanted a convertible other than the 98, you had to go with the Super 88 which saw just 9,007 examples built in 1955. This edition was stored for 56 years before the seller loaded it on a trailer and took it home with him/her. Needing a complete restoration, this Olds is in North Newton, Kansas, and is available here on eBay where the bidding has reached the odd figure of $8055.56 (reserve not met). Thanks for another great tip, T.J.!
Oldsmobile redesigned its cars in 1954 (as did the other GM marques). So, styling changes were minimal the following year when the seller’s drop-top was produced. The company set two milestones that year, building its five-millionth automobile and hitting sales of 583,000 cars for the first time. That would include the 88, Super 88, and 98 of which 9,007 copies were a Super 88 convertible like this one. All Olds cars used a 324 cubic inch “Rocket” V8, but the Super 88 and 98 got a 4-barrel carburetor that helped the motor develop 202 hp. This was paired with a positive-shifting, 4-speed Hydra-Matic transmission.
The seller’s car was in hibernation from 1966 to more recently. As most of the photos provided are from inside a garage, we don’t know if those are before or after the title changed hands. While the seller calls this an 88, it’s a Super 88 according to the VIN, which should make it more valuable. We’re told it’s drivable (likely a placeholder answer in a fill-in-the-blank box) which can’t be the case if the engine is locked as we’re also informed.
All the body panels appear to be original and without rust except the rear body mount. But the things below are somewhat crusty. And the passenger side front fender was replaced at some point, likely due to an accident as the grille and bumper are MIA in the photos. In the same breath, the seller says the car will come with the correct hood and a good bumper, so it may be close to complete and ready to restore. The interior could be original but given its age, all new materials are probably needed. This would be a cool ride once it’s rolling again. When was the last time you saw one of these as a convertible (except in a parade)?
This is definitely worth restoring if that drivetrain is numbers matching and the engine isn’t toast. Good luck to the next owner finding parts for this goliath!
That little add-on speaker laying on the back seat made me smile.
Too much work, too many parts to find that don’t almost exist and too much money for the car, and… not enough money to get out of it when done.
I think some of these viewers would complain even if the seller was giving the car away! Happy Holidays
Yes sir I believe they would
That olds I’d take it not at that price I have the same car it was my grand dad’s car needs love also but it runs fine I need those body parts (GEAR HEAD BILL ) 👍
Will bet money the engine is not frozen ,
These engines were better and stronger than Caddy or Buick …
What usually happens to these is the Water Pump locks up and won’t spin ….
Take the belts off , take the spark plugs out put some PB Blaster in each cylinder and let it sit overnight ….
Leave the plugs off and crank it a few times ….
I would turn it over by hand at least 3 times before cranking it with battery ….
Great advice Bert.
