5k Original Miles: 1987 Chevrolet Mone Carlo SS

If you missed the chance to own a 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS when they still graced showroom floors, fate may have provided you with a second chance. This Monte Carlo looks striking, and its immaculate condition is the result of having clocked only 5,000 miles since 1987. It has no apparent needs and is a turnkey proposition that the buyer can enjoy immediately. I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting the SS listed here on eBay in Saint Louis, Missouri. The seller’s BIN of $46,900 isn’t chicken feed, but they provide the option to make an offer.

The Fourth Generation Monte Carlo was heading into the final stretch by the time this SS rolled off the line in 1987. It had served the company well since 1981, but would disappear from showroom floors at the end of 1988. Chevrolet released a Fifth Generation for the 1995 model year, but by adopting a front-wheel drive platform, it failed to ignite the passion of driving enthusiasts. The first owner ordered this SS in Code 19 Black, and its overall condition is impressive. The seller provides an excellent gallery of high-resolution images in their listing, and although there are paint imperfections, they aren’t severe. I would classify the chips as consistent with a classic that has been driven as its makers intended, as it clocked the 5,000 miles shown on the odometer. However, it is more than a pretty face, with the floors as clean and sound as you could hope to find. The glass is clear, and the original 15″ alloy wheels are free from physical damage.

It seemed that the days of fire-breathing V8s were little but a distant memory by the time this Monte Carlo left the line. History demonstrates that nothing could be further from the truth, with manufacturers now producing V8s with power that would have been in the realm of fantasy during the glory days of the 1960s. This Chevrolet’s 305ci “HO” powerplant generates a relatively modest 180hp, feeding the ponies to the rear wheels via a four-speed 200-4R automatic transmission. The seller indicates that the car received a major service in 2023, including an oil change, a re-cored radiator, and brake and carburetor maintenance. They don’t mention verifying evidence for their mileage claim, but the car’s condition makes the figure plausible.

The seller’s listing text and their photos are contradictory. The seller states that the interior features bucket seats, but that looks like a bench to me! That also makes this an interesting vehicle from my perspective. The ’87 Monte Carlo SS has graced our pages on many occasions since 2011, but I don’t remember seeing many with a bench seat. I won’t say that it is rare, but it is certainly different. The rest of the interior equipment is equally unusual, with the first owner selecting air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt wheel, and an AM/FM radio/cassette player. However, they didn’t tick the boxes beside power windows or power locks on their Order Form. The seller states that, apart from a replacement headliner, this interior is original. Its presentation is first-rate and consistent with the mileage claim. There is no wear, physical damage, or evidence of broken or crumbling plastic.

The seller’s photos suggest that there is little to criticize about this 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. It remains unmolested, avoiding the common 1980s plague of aftermarket additions. It is also a vehicle from the final generation of rear-wheel drive Monte Carlos, making it a genuine “driver’s” car in the eyes of many enthusiasts. The seller’s price is well above average, given recent successful sales, and it is unclear how flexible they might be. What do you feel would be a fair figure for this SS?

Pristine Monte SS. Nice. Column shift probably not a hit w buyers, but wouldn’t bother me, these are cheerful boulevard cruisers, not backwoods rockets.

I agree with Stan. Can’t find one much nicer than this one. When Adam pointed out the discrepancy in the ads writing and photos and about the bucket seats. I started to laugh and thought, hey, the Console shifter is mounted up on the steering column, nlw thats a rare option!!! I’m guessing the headliner may be because of sagging, which was a known problem with GM vehicles ( in my personal experience). But this Monte SS is absolutely top notch!!! Great write up Adam, and another fantastic find too Curvette.

Wasn’t there a song labeled “Mone Mone”? Just don’t see many cars of this era in as good condition as this beauty.

No matter how nice $46,900 is a big ask for a low option 1987 Monte Carlo SS. I hope the seller has documentation for the mileage, for the asking price you should have “proof@ beyond a picture of the speedometer. These are desirable, but how many people would be willing to pay that asking price, there is a lot of competition around that price range from various makes and models.

A beauty. In my book the bench seat and column shift makes it even more desirable. I always.said nothing beats a.bench seat, column shift and a V-8. The fact that is manual windows and lock doesn’t even deter the desirable quotient. This one is a keeper
