65k Mile 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix Model-J

Sitting in the arid suburbs of Las Vegas, is this 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix. The car is listed for sale here on Craigslist for $9,000. It is said to be a 65,000-mile example that is well-optioned and runs great. There are not too many pictures of it in the ad but the seller states that a health situation is forcing the sale. Pontiac introduced the new third generation of the Grand Prix model in 1969. It was the brainchild of John DeLorean to deliver a personal luxury car and it was a home run in terms of sales from day one.

The black interior looks to be in good shape but it is hard to see if the console is missing and the shifter is on the floor. It also appears to have an aftermarket tachometer mounted to the steering column. The seller states that the car is loaded with power windows, power locks, and air conditioning. However, the ad also states that the car needs to be completed. The number of needs is a short list including the fuel gauge, clock, radio, air conditioning, and wipers.

A list of all the recent improvements includes new seat covers and foam, new heater core, wiper motor, radiator, timing gears, water pump, tires, exhaust and KYB shocks. This Grand Prix is a Model J equipped with a 400 cubic inch V8 engine backed by an automatic transmission. The seller has recently serviced the front wheel bearings, automatic transmission, rear end, and rebuilt the carburetor. The rear gears are listed at 3.70:1 which is pretty steep for an automatic transmission.

The paint looks to be in good to fair condition but the vinyl top needs to be replaced. The sale includes a number of parts including the side mirrors, vinyl top, fender emblems, rock panel molding, and carpet. The seller mentions that this could make a great daily driver in the ad. Would you like to daily something like this Grand Prix?

In ’69, the next door neighbor came home in a Verdoro Green Model J, and captured the envy of all us neighborhood car nuts! If I’m not mistaken, those are Buick wheels with PMD caps; they’re certainly not Rallye II’s. Could be a good project for someone. GLWTS!! :-)

I couldn’t afford to drive it at the current gas prices here in the San Francisco Bay area ($6 +/-).

I’m always surprised to see one of those chrome beaks without a dent. It’s either more robust than it looks or Pontiac drivers were excellent parallel parkers.

One of the best looking cars ever made.

Even with that rotted vinyl roof, it appears to be a bargain.

Nice car but a potential buyer needs to have a fat wallet to fix and convert a 1969 air conditioning system and complete all the items on the punch out list. Wonder if those extra parts are trim items that need reinstalled not just spare parts. The vinyl roof is toast as the author noted…probably best not to replace it and allow moisture and rust to form. For all its current faults, the 1969 GP was one of the most beautiful cars ever designed, handled better than its contemporaries and oozed sport and luxury in spades.

Nice car. I think the ’69 was the best looking. Decent price also.

The Gentleman’s GTO. But these were so much more deluxe and loaded with Sock It To Me style, it’s only a matter of time before DeLorean’s G-bodies start ramping up steeply in price. I always loved the ’69 and ’70, but have come around to the ’71 and ’72 which was obviously a labor of love for GM stylists. It’s a Stutz Blackhawk for the celebrity incognito.

I owned a 69 Grand Prix white with a blue vinyl top and I hated to get rid of it.
