6,800 Original Miles: 1990 Ford Mustang LX 5.0

This 1990 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 is one of the more desirable versions out there, as it’s a notchback-body coupe with extremely low mileage. With the hatchback far more frequently seen, the notches have always been rare, but especially as time wore on and most every Fox Body GT ended up trashed or highly modified. Limited supply and the desirable LX 5.0 trim make this one a sure bet for collectors. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $32K and the reserve unmet.

Personally, I love notchback coupes. The upright profile just strikes me as being all the business, and it doesn’t hurt that most police-spec editions were notchbacks. The “Dark Titanium” exterior is 100% original paint, and the seller claims it’s a rare paint code. Won’t argue there, as I can’t recall seeing too many in this shade. The polished wheels still shine nicely and the 5.0 badges and dual exhaust reveal this isn’t the secretary-special six-cylinder.

The interior is as mint as you’d expect, but it’s always so disappointing to me to see the boring, flat-bolstered gray mousefuzz bucket seats. A car like this deserved thickly-bolstered sport seats when new, but you just don’t see it unless a set of aftermarket Recaros have been swapped in (and since the police cars got those, I’d look for a set to swap in.) The bidding seems slightly nuts at the moment, but where else are you going to find a notchback LX with 6,800 original miles?

The engine looks mint, and the seller notes that dealer-installed options were minimal: a pop-up sunroof by ASC, rear defogger, and clearcoat paint were the only options. Though the tires, gas tanks, fuel pumps, and filter have all been replaced, this is otherwise a showroom-fresh Mustang LX 5.0 notchback – and for some of us, that’s as good as it gets for a Fox Body.

Gak,,,it’s my LX, same color, except mine was an automatic. How much for this tin can? Never really cared for the car and I sold mine for $500 bucks in the 90’s. Pray the heater core is still ok.

Who in the name of Lee Iaccocca would pay 32 grand for a Fox bodied Mustang? Egads we’ve lost our minds!

Bidding over $32000 Doesn’t seem to be worth that what’s a base model Mustang cost today brand new

In today’s dollars, this car cost roughly $24000 brand new, $4000 of which it lost in value as soon as it was driven off the lot. It now sells for $35000. I don’t get it. I like the Fox bodies (especially notchbacks) but they are hardly “classics”– basically just used cars.
This is a prime example of the difference between a car’s actual value and “what people will pay”.

Curious about that too – never heard of Recaros in the SSP models.

Mustangs of the era were 4 or 8 cylinder. No six pots after 1987.

Here was my ’86 fastback, however, I’ve ALWAYS loved the 7up Mustangs! My former accountant had one. Wish I had room for her, Todd.

In 1990 I bought a new 5.0 notch for $11200.00. What a bargain for such a fun car.

In 1990 I bought a Gt hatch new late in 1990. It was a left over in titanium. I kept it for a little while and traded it for a 1992 Honda Accord coupe.

I have no desire to buy another Fox bodied Mustang and especially for this price.

Why do people say the LX 5.0 notch is rare. They were all over the lot when they were new.

My mom had the 4 cylinder 5-speed version and it was a dog. 5.0 fixes that. Same everything else. Same money gets you a new Mustang or used Jaguar F-Type with high miles but still I have a hard time with this money. I do remember though that in 1987 I decided to not buy a ‘70 TA Challenger because it was $6.5K and the older guys I was in the USAF with all told me that they weren’t really that nice plus it was 17 years old. Now I’m the old guy…..

Nice car. 15k max I’d pay. If this sells for over 30k, then that’s impressive.

A Fox body notch like this is a unicorn. I would not be surprised one bit if this goes for more than 32k.

You really dont want an aftermarket sunroof in any car, much less a collector car. ASC is out of business too.

One point on this 1990, if some of you don’t know.

The car does have an air bag, but Ford didn’t know how to do an air bag and a tilt wheel at the same time yet.

The wheel is fixed and if it is not at the right height, too bad.

The Reserve is OFF at $35k so this pony is going to sell. There is still four (4) hours left in the eBay auction so the bidding could go even higher. Talk about crazy money … I am in shock and awe!

My guess is collectors are biding this up to put in their collection just because of the low miles and rare color. It will not get driven.

From what I have seen over the years there are not that many unmolested fox body Mustangs out there. I also think that a clean notchback is the most desirable of all the fox Mustangs with the Cobra being second.

I see this being bid up by “bidders” to reserve and being a no sale then resisted.

I think they are pretty cool. I like this body style much better than the GT style. It looks pretty stealthy. My buddy still has an ’89 LX 5.0 that he bought new in ’89. Unfortunately, it has about 30 times more mileage and has had to be kept outdoors.

I agree that the price is way too high for me. Plus, could you get a sunroof on a ’90 Mustang? It looks like after market to me. If it is, that would certainly lower the value.

I have a convertible in titanium. That’s right, it’s a 4 popper. I think kbb has it’s value listed as $898 in good condition. I paid 500 bucks for it. It’s a dog, but I saved $31,000! LOL

Whether one wants to admit it or not, clean, low- or ultra-low mileage Fox Body Mustangs are consistently fetching very solid prices. Overpriced? Crazy, deep-pocket buyer? A few years ago, definitely yes. Today, maybe not so much.

its definitely a nice car. I’ve always thought the 85-86 GT were the nicest. better seats/ cooler front grill.

Nice coupe! Clean, crisp design. Quick little mustangs and loads of fun to drive. Parts are cheap and they are easy to work on. Not surprised by the price, really.
My 87 SSP. Love driving it!

And it sold for $35,100. Not surprising at all. Rare color and notch Fox’s are desirable with the gear heads right now. Lightest model of all the Foxs.
That said, I will say it again, you will continue to see these 87-93 models increase in price. They are now being sought after. Buy one now, and you won’t be the guy later, saying “I wish I had spent $5-7k on one”
