D’Elegance? How’s that for a pretentious-sounding name? Not only is it a D’Elegance edition, but it’s an upgrade to the exalted Brougham (pronounced bro-ham) model. All of this silliness aside, this 1990 Cadillac is a nice-looking luxury sedan that has been well cared for and has only experienced 8,300 miles. Zen found the listing for this stately-looking Cadillac, it’s located in Holliston, Massachusetts and is available, here on craigslist for $39,500.
Cadillac had largely moved to front-wheel drive by 1990 but not in the case of the Brougham. The body-on-frame design with its 221″ overall length and 121.5″ wheelbase continued to rely on a longitudinally mounted V8 engine connected to a rear live axle. This was the one that served as a basis for a limousine model as well as occupied the top drawer in Cadillac’s ’90 lineup. The D’Elegance package was just that, an add-on of additional luxury and trim components.
There’s here nothing to criticize (except the cheesy-looking dealership added “gold package”), with only 8,300 miles, and proper storage, this Caddy is in like new condition. The exterior is a bit busy with its stainless trim, silver painter rocker panels, and chrome-plated wire wheels – which were an option in place of wire wheel covers. While generally not a fan of vinyl roof coverings, the one affixed to this Brougham is classy-looking and is perfectly befitting a black-finished sedan and its squared, formal roof line.
No Cadillac power here, that charge went to Chevrolet’s 175 net HP, 350 CI V8 engine which is mated to a Turbo-Hydramatic 200-R4 overdrive, automatic transmission. According to Cadillac’s ’90 documentation, this engine was only available with the inclusion of the trailering package and the listing notes that option’s inclusion. Nothing is said about this Caddy’s running and driving characteristics – not that there’s a reason to suspect an issue. One interesting side note is that in 1972, a single exhaust-equipped Chevy 350 CI engine generated 175 net HP, and eighteen years later, in this specific instance, there has been no improvement in spite of a switch from carburation to indirect injection.
Well, the interior is early ’90s Cadillac all the way with its tufted leather upholstery. Faux wood trim abounds and the entire environment looks like the smoking lounge of a gentry men’s social club. Nothing is out of place and the interior’s condition matches that of the exterior. My only concern would be getting lulled into a 70 MPH interstate snooze.
Research tells us that this car cost about $24K in ’90 and the seller now wants almost $40 large. Yes, this Borugham is in magnificent shape but it’s not one that would be considered collectible. So, what’s your thought, priced right or not quite?
There’s a guy named Anthony Gozzo who’s from Specialty Motor Cars who’ll love to have that car immediately!! He’s a huge fan of the Fleetwood Brougham and is always hunting down low mileage examples.
Yep, he’d want that car no doubt about it, but not for that price, which is probably the top retail number one could get the car for. Typically they want at least 3-4 grand over what they paid for a used car and my info is about 10-15 years ago so probably on the low side. That said, the car most likely doesn’t need much of anything IF it was stored properly and at least the engine run from time-to-time.
Anthony doesn’t charge 40K for his low mileage Broughams.
If Anthony buys this, it would go to Papa Bear or in his own collection. I tried to buy a Brougham from him, but he never called me back.
Sorry $40,000 😳… Yes it’s in beautiful shape and probably rides like being on a cloud. Maybe $29,500… but you need a Cadillac person who really wants this Gold Edition. Good luck to the seller. 🇺🇸🐻
Yes, needs somebody either with a vowel on the end of their name or a Hawaiian 😉
If that’s a slur to Italian Americans then I resent it. And to you Mr. Barn Finds please entertain only comments about the article
I have a vowel at the end of my name and I do like this car. I have owned cadillacs since I started driving 70 years ago. But I have known many people of different nationalities that love and drive this type of vehicle. Sixone you are a dirty rat.
I occasionally see these Brougham models on Cadillac used, sorry previously owned, lots. I don’t think this is the high price rare Cadillac the current owner is hoping for.
I would be a buyer at 20,000. And I think that’s high but I know the type of vehicle because I actually owned a 1990 brougham back in the 90s.
Yeaah,but not at that price!!!!
Gold trim and grille very cheesy stock would be way better. At least with a 350 underhood it will have reasonable scoot and way more fuel efficiency that a 72 version. Alwaya had a soft spot for the model but prefered the four eye version.
I’ve always loved Cadillac Broughton. This car is a little over price. Anthony Gozzo who is expert in finding the best Caddic. He lives in New Hapshire
Love to tow the sea doo to the ocean 🌊 with this D’elegance Caddy.
Hmm…the car has New Hampshire plates on it. He’s probably already seen it.
Love the car! And I happen to especially LOVE those gold accents! Way too “rich” in price for me, however — and I am not fond of riding on leather seats. Still, if I had the place and the means, I’d love to own it!
Looks more like 1980, than 1990 — especially with no air bags. Just an additional thought. Hadn’t GM rounded everything off by 1990? — or, was that 1991? Really MISS these sleek rear-drive, “boxy” luxury sedans, without the low rounded nose and the rising rear. I drive a 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis with 357+ thousand miles. This Cadillac is in every way beautiful to my eyes — nothing “cheesy” at all about the gold and the added trim — I love it!
I had one of these, same year and with those pillow-top d’Elegance seats and the 350. It was gorgeous, comfortable, and stylish, like a luxury car used to and should be. They changed the definition of luxury in the late 90s to mean superfast, smaller, less comfortable with hard bucket seats and console/shifter, and they all look the same to compete with the jap and kraut mobiles. The only problem with mine was it’s age, and it had HVAC electrical problems, and a screwy valve body in the transmission that I got tired of dealing with so I sold it. Its a better looking and riding car than it was reliable, at least the one I had was. There are collectors out there, so he may just get somewhere near his price. I hope it finds a good home.
Worth 20 that’s all no moon roof and not the last year 92
It’s definitely a gorgeous Brougham. But $40,000? It will Never be collectable. I sold these cars when they were new. They’re great cars. I think this car is over priced by $15,000 at least. That Gold Pkg doesn’t make that car a Gold Bar.
Oh, Man! If I had that much money laying around . . .
I’d definitely buy something else! LOL!
What engine would it have without the towing package?
175 hp doesn’t sound like enough with the weight it has to move without towing anything. I haven’t heard of any 350s being torque monsters.
Probably the Olds 307
No, the Chevy 305
Love the car, not the price.
I have owned and restored three Caddy examples similar to this one but all Cadilac engines the 425 1978, 1979 and 1958. Mine were all low milage but not this low 30k low. Restoring one is expensive, the wire wheels if Cadilac are very rare. The price is high, and 30 k would be a decent price if all checks out. The best luxury rides I have ever owned great driving and riding cars.
This one to me is underpowered but gearing may help that not sure.
