94k Mile Survivor: 1971 Jeep Commando

The Jeep Commando is not one of the more-commonly seen Jeep models, so it’s fun whenever one pops up for sale. This 1971 version with 94k miles presents very well, with the seller claiming it to be all original save for a repaint. It’s currently up for sale here on eBay in Marion, Illinois. At the time of writing there is a single $17,000 bid, but the reserve is unmet.

In the 1960s demand for SUVs began to take off, especially for ones that were more than just tough offroaders but also had some creature comforts and could be driven daily. These were still very bare and basic by todays standards, but models like the Blazer, Bronco, Wagoneer and Scout were beginning to shift the market. The Commando was introduced for the 1967 model year, and this body style ran until 1971 which means our example was the last year of the first generation.

I haven’t seen many yellow Jeeps, and it looks great in the photos. The white roof, yellow body, and black lower cladding almost gives this a tri-tone look, and it’s quite attractive. The seller says it’s a repaint, but doesn’t say how long ago the work was done. I assume it was the factory color, since there are a lot of painted surfaces on the interior in the same shade, and I doubt the whole interior would have been disassembled to accommodate a complete color change. No photos are shown of the underside, but no rust is immediately visible on the photos of the body and the seller does say it is “rust free.” The only flaw really noticeable is a rear bumper that doesn’t sit level. No photos are provided of the engine, but it’s the 225 cubic inch V6 attached to a 3-speed manual transmission.  The seller says it starts up right away and runs great.

The interior on this Commando is also in very good condition. There aren’t many soft surfaces, which means that it has held up well over time. The seat covers look to be free of damage, and with a good cleaning they should look just about new. The dash is very simple with minimal gauges, but you can even see that the dash lights work in the above photo. The horn button is missing, but that looks to be the only item that the future owner needs to address. Overall, this Jeep has withstood the last 50 years and 94,000 miles very well, and will be a great addition to someone’s garage.

71 is THE YEAR with the saginaw steering, and not the problematic Ross. It’s also the last year before the bullnose. The seller mentions color change, so was it originally yellow or not. Doesn’t really matter, it’s a nice Commando, but it sure would be nice if sellers posted many more pictures for those of us far away. I passed on several of these over the last couple of years, but would like to have one someday. Instead I’m rolling with a bare bones XJ that is rust free, uncut, but has an off road patina you just can’t duplicate.

The missing horn ring is a deal-breaker. (wink)

the seventeen is for all the rest0 wrk put in.
A bent 6 has some good tq but depending on the “V” (some 10* all the way thru 120* is) prone to vibes 8- 0

This model is mighty fine, a small lift w/bigger tire is quite capable nxt to all the other off rders. Want a classic? pick the Jeepster ’48 – 50+, lota style. More uptempo is the ’66 – 71, but last 2 yrs brought a kool chrome stamped grill and the super fine 4 oh i6 or big thumpers – I think 2 different bent8s.
