This 1977 Ford F-150 Ranger 4×4 short bed has had a significant amount of work done to it in hopes of making it a great daily driver. There’s still work to be done and given the current situation, the seller has decided to move it along. The classic truck and 4×4 market is hot these days, with enthusiasts and collectors both on the hunt for examples to hold on to. With a little more work, this one would definitely be worth having around. You can find this driver in The Dalles, Oregon and you can bid below.
When the seller acquired this truck, they had plans of making it into their daily driver. When they found it, the 400 cui V8 needed a full tune-up. While they were working on the engine, they went ahead and installed a mild cam, distributor, fuel pump, header gaskets, and a shift kit. The engine runs great now and the C-6 automatic and 4-wheel drive systems work as they should. The big 400 was rated at just 169 horsepower in 1977, but it produces decent amounts of torque and the cam should help to open it up more.
The interior has seen an extensive amount of work. When they got the truck, there was some rust through in the driver’s side floor pan. So, they removed that side’s floor pan and welded in a brand new replacement pan. There was also some rust in the bottom corner of the driver’s side door and the mirror holes on the passenger side, so both of those spots were cut out and new metal was welded in. A new front right fender was also installed, as it had some damage.
With the rust repaired, a new interior was installed. This included replacing the headliner, sun visors and brackets, seat, carpet with new Jute pad, kick panels, door panels, armrests, inside door handles, rubber door seals, door sill plate (polished aluminum) and four new speakers. The looks great and is ready for adventure!
There’s still one spot of rust that should be dealt with in the driver’s side rear fender wheel and some surface rust in the bed to be treated, but this truck is ready to drive as is. The seller did their best to touch-up the exterior paint, but the driver’s door needs the bottom edge painted. A fresh coat of paint would have it looking it’s best though. Of course, if you plan on driving it on dirt roads or taking it off roads, you might want to leave it as is!
At this point, this truck just needs cosmetic work. The seller states that it runs and handles great, it even cruises nicely on the freeway! Since they were fixing all the issues to just get it back on the road and with the outbreak of COVID-19, the seller never transferred the title into their own name, but it is signed and clear. 1977? What I see here is ’73-’75. The engine is ’77 vintage. I couldn’t see under the front to determine whether the power steering is integral or assisted. ’73-’75 was assisted with integral introduced on F-150 4×4 in ’76. Grill and trim is ’73-’75 although the Ranger should have the lower side moldings. Of course, they could’ve been removed. I had a ’75 with the XLT package. It was kind of fancy but it still plowed through snow like there was no tomorrow. If this truck came my way I would first determine exactly what it was then I would finish the project. Then drive it…
I agree with you on the grill ! The 77 F-150 also had a funky bent up tie rod ! I’m thinking 76 was the first year for the F-150 or 77. I ordered a brand new one in spring of 77 short bed. it was delivered in April. Back then the tranny’s sucked and slipped really back into gear. So I got the 4 speed stuck with/granny. 351M motor. A few years later I figured out how to make the M series more efficient and run better. RV cam, Holley 450, and advance the crank 4° with offset key. I went from 11-12 Max mpg to a steady 15 ! Back then that meant a lot ! Gas was an outrageous 58.9¢ a gal !! I loved that truck ! Had lots of fun in the mud too.
Wow! Amazing that orange xlt . I had a 74 short box 6-1/2 ‘ 4×4 exactly like that back in 78. Had the 360 in it with four speed. I paid $3500 for it with a little over 30,000 miles . The paint was perfect even had the same wheels! Like a fool I traded it for a new bronco II. Billings truck
Let’s hope that they replaced the stock
timing-gears when they changed the cam,
as the 400 was notorious for being set-up
to run the cam retarded. Don’t forget to use
the SPECIAL 400 thermostat.
So the seller told us that the work was done by a shop in Bend, Oregon, so they are unsure if the gears were replaced. We are going to see about finding out which shop did the work and if they have the paperwork still.
I don,t know if the timing gears were off set on this year,but 78 they are. You can change them to the straight up and down and it will increase the mileage and power.. I think the 78 had like a 14 degree btfc. s Seems like this truck is in nice shape for what he is asking. . They didn,t say anything about the yokes ,bearings seals etc. If they had I am sure they would have mentioned them and the price would be higher.
I’ll check with the seller on the yokes and bearings to see if they replaced them. They did tell me that a lot of work was done by the previous owner, but I will see if they happen to have any receipts to show what work might have been done.
I could nitpick a few things but overall a nice Styleside. The 73-79’s seem to be quite popular.
How many miles does the engine have on it currently?
The price is right that’s for sure!! A running driving 4×4 for $2500!!

The odometer is showing 60,364 miles. I just emailed the seller to see how many miles have been put on it since the engine was rebuilt and will make sure to post that as soon as I hear back!
I already agreed with the guy about the 74 grill. I can’t find it but just the other day a 77 crew cab 4 door F-250 with the proper grill was posted on here
