Ever had one of those moments where you’ve looked at something in a newspaper or the internet and then wished that you hadn’t? Well, I’m having one of those moments now. I had decided to have a relaxing Sunday afternoon just wasting time, and then I looked at the latest offerings to come across the Barn Finds inbox. I saw this and felt compelled to write about it. For sale here on eBay is this beautiful 1966 Mustang. Located in Dyersville, Iowa, this absolute peach of a car comes with a clean title and can be yours with a BIN of $15,000 but with the option to make an offer.
So why did I feel so compelled? Because this car would be my absolutely ideal Mustang if I were ever in a position to buy one. I’ve always had a real love for the ’66, and it’s got a 289 which just about makes it perfect for me! If this car meets all of the claims made by the seller then it’s one seriously nice little car. The seller states that it is a California car and that it has never had any rust. He also claims that the paintwork and panels are all original. If that’s the truth then this really is a time capsule.
So, what do I think of the interior? The first thing that I’ll say is that it isn’t perfect. The carpet appears to be a bit faded and there is some noticeable wear on the wheel rim. Would I change it? Not in your life. This is a car that you could hop into and feel comfortable about enjoying. The dash looks good, along with the seats and door cards, so it’s getting a big thumbs up from me.
Ah, there’s that 289. This one looks to be in about the right state for a car that has been cared for rather than one that is being kept concourse. The seller has done a bit of work on it, and he sounds like someone who cares about his cars. The air con has only recently been recharged and blows nice and cold. It also features a rebuilt carburetor, top end of the engine, power steering and radiator. The seller has also fitted new tires, a new fuel tank, and a sender unit. He claims that the car runs and drives well.
The trunk looks really good, but I definitely would have removed the extraneous items from there before I took the photo. It’s great to see the original trunk mat, tire cover, and tool pouch all present. The only thing that I question is the wire running across the trunk floor on the left. Maybe it’s nothing, but a potential buyer looking at the photos can’t be sure.
So, would I buy it? If I had the money and I wasn’t 10,000 miles away from it I would in a heartbeat. This has been my dream car since I was a lad. The biggest issue that I’d have if I bought it would be trying to explain it to my wife….or I could just buy it and hope for the best when she saw it. After all, it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.
Greatfind Adam, keep them coming, thanks, Mike.
Nice find and nice write-up. I actually like the luggage rack on this one. Adam, don’t you ever sleep? :-)
Thanks for that Michael. Nah, sleep is for the weak! Actually, a 14 hour time difference between Australia and the USA accounts for me writing while you guys are sleeping. But I do love doing these write-ups.
It shows in your writing. Australia is on my bucket list. Maybe in the next 5 years. Cheers.
Lovely car and write-up, especially as you didn’t even mention the red hoses.
The pay must be exemplary! LOL
If it holds up under an in person inspection it highlights how out of touch the typical 6 cylinder Mustang and Falcon sellers are. Nice write up.
This car is a good example of how simple colors, such as white body and black top work well together.

Either it’s not quite as original as the seller claims, or Ford used whatever interior door panels it had on hand when the car was built. A Mustang with a black, standard interior should have black door panels. However, with the speed at which Ford was building Mustangs at the time, it’s entirely possible that there were no black panels on hand, or that the white panels were installed by mistake.
Nice Mustang, however, the door panels are not correct.
The door panels could be black or white but easy Chang out parts are so easy to get great looking car would love to know the miles but I would go for it I have. 65
If I asked for permission, I’d never own my Mustang!
This is a nice looking original Mustang. If I had an extra $15k, I’d be asking for forgiveness. Looks worth the price.
If you ever have to ask the wife for permission to buy any car, let alone a classic which is an investment, then she must ask your permission when she wants to pay out cash to have her hair, nails etc. done, which is not an investment!
@Ken… Best reply I could come up with to your post.
Nice ‘Stang. If it had a manual trans I’d be all over it!
Nice looking car but I would think if all those things he has done were recently the car has set for quite awhile. The wire running across the trunk may be to the license plate light, the only other wire that runs across the front of the trunk area is for the sending unit in the gas tank.
This is no 15k mile Mustang. Engine bay is filthy, Gas and brake pedals are well worn. Interior looks old as well as the carpet. Door panels are totally wrong as mentioned. Vin tag looks funky. Seller on eBay has zero feedback which is a red flag. Maybe a 115k mile car with a repaint.
It is not wiring going across the left. that’s a crack in the trunk liner and it loops around the wheel well . Zoom in
What’s with the “air con” comments. It’s A/C!!!!!! less letters and you’re not talking about an old movie!!!
Reasonably nice car. I would question the originality of the paint. Primarily because of the tape marks and scuffing around the VIN tag.
Agreed that the door cards should be black. I can’t really see under the rocker panel molding, but it looks like the pinch welds are white. If they are, it is a repaint. Does look like a nice car though!
Dyersville, Iowa, home of “Field of Dreams”. Surprised no one caught that fact. “If you build it, he will come.” 😉 “Is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa.”
Are the seats correct? The material?
Though it says it’s a California car, Iowa is rustbelt area due to sand and salt.
I’d give it a very good examination before laying down any cash.
Did you notice that this car has a bench seat?
The wire laying on top of the trunk mat is not positioned correctly. Ford did not put the wiring on top of the mat, it was always placed under the mat and did not run across the top of a body panel. It would have run along the side of the trunk drop off to the rear body panel and then across that panel if it went to the license plate light. The wiring was always placed in an area that it would be hard for an owner to get anything caught in it.
Bench seat are cool and so is a notch back Stang, looks like a nice car..
Camaro also had a bench seat…

This is a nice older restoration. 15k? The market will decide that but I think not.
I don’t think it is a repaint, Look at the vin number on the door jam and latch assembly. No over spray. I looked at the sill plates and that aluminum will start frosting over time that maybe what your seeing. Hard to make out on the pics. As far as that wire goes, someone pulled up the trunk mat to look in the side wells and just didn’t put it back correctly. Take to seconds to fix that. Even if it is a 115K mile car, it was well taken care of and I don’t think his asking price is unreasonable. Obviously a close up inspection is required to verify all that. I do think the vinyl top has been redyed at some point to freshen it up. Which if done correctly is not a bad thing.
Nice car, but no way it’s paint is original. Inside the trunk probably. The door tag looks to have a small bit of over spay and the rest was scraped off with a screw driver perhaps. The door cards are not factory. There is no way they ran out of black and installed white to move it through. Just a clean 115k Mustang coupe that is priced fair for what it is. A/C was added after it left the dealer too.
The wire in the trunk appears to me to be a tear in the trunk mat after zooming in. Still a great cruiser!
Rich K., I believe you are correct.
What a tough crowd ! I would like to put a 100 point Pebble Beach car on Barn Finds and find out if it really is a 100 pts. I am pretty sure NOT.
Looks good, but I would definitely question how long it’s been in Iowa, because they do use salt there on the roads! Maybe it was never driven on the ice and snow? What people don’t seem to realize is after winter and the roads look good there is plenty of salt dust everywhere! All the cars then pick that up and it’s spreads everywhere under the car so then when it gets moisture under it very strong potential for rust!
Nice write-up Adam but, please, for your own sake, learn the difference between “concourse” and “concours”.
Seller has zero feedback. Red Flag. nnd a rustang with no rust?? Buyer beware and inspection is a must.
Good luck to the new owner.
So the seller has no feedback, at least now you know he’s not one of those dreaded flippers
