Sometimes, you see a car and it just breaks your heart. It’s one thing to see a special vehicle that’s been sitting quietly in a garage for decades, but to see one that’s been abused and left for dead, it elicits different emotions. This 1979 Porsche 911 may not be a “real” convertible, but it is now – and it also sports a flat-nose conversion that we doubt strongly it left the factory with. The 911 now has accident damage and other flaws, and is listed here on eBay with bids to $10,600 and no reserve.
The 911 is offered by eBay seller Just Donated, which we’ve featured before for having some fascinating cars that somehow don’t find a new home before getting chucked to the donation pile. It always makes me wonder where cars like this have been hiding, especially since a lot of these vehicles are likely given to a donation facility when an heir doesn’t know what to do with a family member’s car after they can no longer use said vehicle. This 911 has some of the typical modifications for the era, from a whale tail spoiler to the flachbau front end. It also has some very real damage to the front and rear ends.
And, oh boy – the tweaks don’t stop at the bodywork, extending into the interior with a wood trim dash kit, red-faced gauges, leather seats with red piping, aftermarket speakers, and lots of cosmetic flaws. In addition to the bodywork and a full paint job, the interior needs to be torn down and redone. There are too many flaws here to make the original components worth saving, so I’d recommend a full do-over back to factory specs. I’m actually shocked to see the factory steering wheel still in place.
When you see this many exposed wires and cables, you know someone spent more money on the stereo system than annual maintenance at some point in its ownership history. The damage to the nose is concentrated on the passenger-side fender, and I’m sure there’s plenty of ugliness hidden all around this battered 911. The question for me is whether the 911 market is so hot that even a car like can be restored without losing your shirt, or is this destined to be a parts car?
Doesn’t break my heart. All this tells me, and hopefully others, just looking at the general condition of this once fabulous car, some spoiled So. Cal. brat crybaby killed this thing, and probably couldn’t care less. I mean, look at what DOESN’T work on this car,,,terrible. Big joke, let’s trash mom and dads graduation gift.
And now you know the rest of the story,,,good day.
I had an old 928 that had similar damage to the front fender the part wasn’t too hard to find but since he has a custom front end on it after getting the sub body pulled and straightened which I’m sure it’s going to need to be done taking to a garage and have it stretched because I guarantee you that bottom pan is wrinkled if not punctured then the front end parts then the rear end parts God knows if it push the engine into the rear drive line or bent anything back there either this is a basket case if you ask me
Rot,
Thank you for a coherent review of the issues at hand and a succint evaluation, instead of a cantankerous old fart rant.
Howard, look. It seems you earned yet another compliment.
“cantankerous old fart rant”
That must have been taken directly from a t-shirt at Walmart. .
Looks to me that it took a rear end hit and got pushed into something really hard up front. Is pretty rough looking all over more than anywhere else. Parts car might be a little drastic but there is a bunch of work and money ahead to reincarnate this one.
Looks like the classic show-off “floor it when the light turns green”….spin it and crash …left rear/right front damage.
They should have stuck with the 1988 Chevy Nova as a graduation gift instead…
the emblem on the hood looks original…
It’s been completely sullied. Ugh. Ugh!
I don’t know if anyone on this website know any rich people, but this car is just garbage to a rich person: buy it, customize it, wreck it, dump it, then buy another car and start over again….
The exact car (but in white paint) was parked in the front center parking space at a hotel on Long Island NY. I watched that car sit there all summer, autumn, under a foot of snow in the winter, and next spring and summer. No one in the hotel knew whose it was and it sat there falling apart for 1 1/2 years. Then one day it was gone…
Probably, the local car theft ring finally found someone that could drive a stick.
See? Now that’s some FUNNY cantankerous ol fart stuff!
Signed,
A Boomer
This “convertible” just doesn’t look quite right to me…. It looks like it might have been made to look like a convertible with a canvas overlay with fake ribs and all… The door and side windows are all wrong for a convertible too.
I’m no Porsche expert (only owned 2), but aren’t these referred to as “slant nose,” not “flat nose”?
Well “slant nose” was found to be offensive to a demographic of people, so to prevent any problems, the term has since been changed to “flat nose”.
Go figure. LOL
SOLD for $17,200.
