Actually Driven: 1987 Ferrari 328 GTS

When we see a sports or exotic car come up for grabs, we typically see a max of 25,000 miles or so (give or take). So anything higher than that is worth talking about, as it’s always refreshing to see an owner actually drive a car that was pretty much built for that sole purpose. This 1987 Ferrari 328 GTS has just over 50,000 miles and is listed here on eBay with bids to $45,400 and the reserve unmet.

What a great looking car. We rarely see the 328 modified in any way, always seemingly appearing for sale with the classic 5-spoke wheels, red paintwork, and a simple interior with the classic Ferrari gated shifter. The seller shares in the listing that this 328 has been repainted and that “…all services done” with less than 1,000 miles since the paint job and recent servicing. It is also claimed to be a one-owner car.

The respray is a selling point, in my opinion, but other enthusiasts may consider it a drawback. While I would always prefer to find a car with original paint, I can also appreciate how nice it is to walk up to a vintage sports car that looks absolutely mint despite its age and miles. The interior is in very good condition and appears to be original, so it makes me wonder what happened that the exterior needed to be repainted. Perhaps it was suffering from clearcoat failure or other issues stemming from too many years in the sun.

While the seller indicates the 328 GTS is up-to-date on its servicing, he doesn’t say the words “engine out belt service”, which is really what you need to see to understand whether this Ferrari is truly ready to go. We love seeing some signs of use and age on a car like this, such as the paint chipping off the valve cover, which suggests that this 328 hasn’t lead the life of a garage queen (despite looking quite sharp) and is an example you won’t feel bad about using as Enzo intended.

These 308 and 328 series don’t require engine-out service to replace the belts, as that can be done with these transverse engines remaining in-situ, via a removable shroud in the passenger side rear wheel well.

The requirement for engine-out routine maintenance other than oil/filter changes started with the switch to a longitudinal engine layout with the 348 and Mondial T.

This exact topic of engine-out service for timing belts came up a week ago with a 1986 328GTS which was up for sale and I commented to the author, Jeff. Evidently, he is not reading our comments…he could learn a bit as many subscribers to BF have so much knowledge they share willingly.

To be clear, the 308/328 GTB/GTS Ferraris have transverse-mounted engines which allow access to the timing belts from the passenger-side rear wheel well and DO NOT require the “engine out” service to accomplish such.

The engine and underneath look bad, $48k now, they might want close to $100k or more.

The 308s were nicer, but even they were over the top expensive. So many just as nice if not better cars out there for a fraction of the price.

The 308 QV is same car less .2
Liters. Although some prefer what they see as cleaner exterior styling. Of the 328. I’ve owned my QV for some 30 years now and have 135k miles. It’s been exceptionally reliable and easy to
Maintain. No the engine does not need to be removed for the belt service nor a clutch replacement. It never had the break neck performance but still had enough to get you in trouble.
The 308 was once called the poor man’s Ferrari. Even though it’s still the least costly “poor man’s” no more… if you do buy one drive it !

Many years ago, I had access to a 365 and my memory is that it had neither power steering or a gated shifter. Are my memories leaking out my ear at night? It was 1979 – 44 years ago, so a little slack would be great. I tried to put as many miles as possible while I had it, but t don’t remember the specific shifter but recall the brutal requirements for slow speed parking.

Always loved the 308/328 cars…….years ago some guys opens a used sports car lot in my town, had a couple Jags/Porsches etc
they had a silver 308 on the lot, the lot owner driving it around town.
Keep in mind this is a small town, and while there was a Porsche dealer if you had a Ferrari you went somewhere else and brought it home……
this silver 308 had a 100k miles on it, advertised for 30k$…..
I should have bought it, but had just bought a brand new boat, and was intimidated by the mileage…ah hindsight, you are a killer.
I still think they are great cars, got to be a ton of fun to drive around on weekends, sadly now priced way out of my range
