Alaskan Camper from California? 1965 Chevrolet C20

This is a great combination! The truck is a 1965 Chevrolet C20 and features a vintage Alaskan camper. The pair is said to have been together since virtually new. They can be found here on eBay with an asking starting bid of $6,000. Located in Alhambra, California, the truck has always resided in The Golden State.

The photos of the camper show what appears to be a surprisingly roomy interior. The neat think about Alaskan campers is they move up and down allowing for ease of use. When driving the truck, the low profile keeps wind shear down and keeps the center of gravity low. When you get to camp, you can raise the camper for a full standing-height interior. There is a stove, refrigerator, and dinette which the ad says have been gone through. The interior of the pickup looks like it is in great shape also. If you’d like to read more, you can read about the history of Alaskan campers here.

The original 6-cylinder engine has been removed and a 350 cubic inch V8 put in its place. It also features a heavy-duty radiator to run cool while camping in the desert southwest.

The truck was only used for camping since new, which explains less than 100,000 miles on the odometer. How neat is this project? Would you refurbish the exterior or leave it as-is and enjoy it?

That rig really appeals, Montana, but a lack of covered parking space at the Floyd Lippencott Jr Home for Unreformable Hot Rodders precludes me from considering a purchase and shipment to NZ of this clean Chebby truck.

Have the laws changed in CA, as it used to be that if one had a permanently attached camper unit, a pick up was exempt from the commercial vehicle surcharge? The surcharge came in around 1974, if I recall correctly, as I remember getting my renewal notice for my previously-mentioned ’73 Datsun pick up and was amazed at how much more it was going to cost me to register it.

I was just going to comment that I would like to see the registration card as this pick up has passenger car license plates so I would like to see the body style they registered with.

Man, I’d leave this as is EXCEPT ad AC. I like these Chevy truck years.

Yes, tidy up what needs, make needed repairs, add a/c, etc. Good move to move up to a 350. That 6 cyl was good for a lot of things, but, not hauling a camper into the wilderness. This is a super truck and camper. I sure wish I was living in a “camping” area: this one could be mine. BTW, I lived in Wyoming for 27 years.

If the original six was a 292, it was IDEAL for pulling a camper into the wilderness. I would never have made such a swap.

Beautiful camper set up. Modern engine. As Dean said, A/C would be a welcome improvement!!

Good luck to the new owner. Would be a hit to display at car shows!!!

I like the truck but I’m not all that wild and crazy about a camper; I’d rather pull a small trailer. I a little disappointed that the original engine got pulled; it was probably a 292 and those were ferocious pullers. I saw lots of units similar to this in Glacier Park back in the 60s. I was amazed at what they pulled with them….

agree @geomechs – I’d prefer to have the original six.

Lots of great memories with our Alaskan camper. It was identical this one – a model from the ’60s – 10′ length without the overhang over the cab. Dad modified it (per usual practice) to have some foldup bunks that doubled as seat backs where we sat to eat dinner. A big step up from the big ’60’s era tent it replaced.

It was a heavy unit – even on our 3/4 ton Ford but well-built. They probably owned it for about 10 years.

Love this, want, I had a 65 shortbed I toured the west in the 80s, those were the days. If I had the cash I would snag this and go again.
