All Original 5-Speed: 1988 Ford Mustang GT

The 1980s called, and they want their muscle car back! That’s the first thought that enters into my head upon gazing at this nicely preserved 1988 Ford Mustang GT, which appears to be in bone stock condition. Featuring the classic GT two-tone paint scheme with the OEM wheels and no obvious alterations, the Mustang also sports the preferred 5-speed manual transmission. When it comes to buying performance vehicles, it almost always makes more sense to buy one in stock condition, and this car is no exception. Find the Mustang listed here on craigslist for $19,995.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Barney for the tip. A few years ago, it seems the world began waking up to how difficult it was getting to find a nicely preserved Fox body Mustang. Too many had been altered with modifications of questionable value, and even if the custom touches were carried out to a decent level of quality, it became apparent the rarer car was the one left untouched. While the special edition Saleens and Cobras carry the highest values, a clean GT like this one is also quite desirable. The two-tone paint job was somewhat iconic as well, even if the later models painted one shade are arguably more desirable.

The interior is likely the most compelling feature of this Mustang, as it appears to be in absolutely spectacular condition. The nicely bolstered factory sport seats show virtually no wear, and the period cell phone is the icing on the cake. It reminds you that just because you weren’t in a 1980s Mercedes-Benz S-Class didn’t mean you weren’t a high-flying executive who needed to be able to communicate on the go. The fact that the phone remains in place is another testament to the level of preservation this car enjoys, and other tell-tale signs included the  crack-free dash and door weatherstripping that still appears to have some life left in them.

Don’t you love seeing the factory airbox still installed? That’s usually one of the first things to go, along with the exhaust, when someone gets their hands on a clean Fox body like this. With just under 75,000 original miles, it’s not exactly a surprise that this Mustang still looks as good as it does, but we’ve seen plenty of cars with 50,000 and under that have been heavily modified and present much differently. Power-wise, a stock 5.0L should make around 225 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, which is still more than enough to be entertaining in modern traffic. Would you spring for a survivor Mustang GT from this era of the platform or look for a newer model from the early 90s?

Good write-up Jeff. I agree with your perspective on this nice stock Fox. With so many of them being modified, the clean and stock examples became collectible (and not cheap). Foremost the base coupes, but the GT’s like this also. This looks like a nice example, I like the two tone blue/silver. The cell phone is cool.

Compelling. I like the ’80s Fox Mustangs best. Price is pretty reasonable. Not so few miles that I wouldn’t drive it nor so many that it’s thrashed. Good colors in and out, I actually prefer the two tone paint. Has a manual. Not much to complain about here.

This one is about as nice as they come. One of the best color combos in and out, completely stock as God meant them to be. Too bad I don’t have $20 large to throw at a car right now as this one is about 20 miles away from me.
