Almost Finished: 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Restoration

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Chevy Camaro was in its sophomore year in 1968 having quickly settled into the Number 2 sales position behind the hot Ford Mustang. As a result, the cars were little changed going into the second year, and differences were subtle to the eye. This ’68 Camaro is the base model that was restored 20 years ago and then went into storage. Some of the trim still needs to be reinstalled. Located in a garage in St. James, Missouri, this “pony car” is available here on eBay where $12,100 is the current bid without cracking the seller’s reserve. But later in the listing, the seller indicates wanting to get $30,000 out of the sale.

What’s missing here is the reason why the restoration on this Camaro got stalled so close to the finish line – and wasn’t revisited for two decades. On the plus side, the machine is numbers matching, sporting its original 327 cubic inch V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. So, this vehicle was not ordered to be a muscle car, although it wears an SS gas cap as the other attempt to mirror a Super Sport.

Perhaps this Chevy was intended to be a family car, as it has power accessories and factory air conditioning. Plus, it was purchased with what we’re told is the rare bench/buddy seat. The interior looks stellar as does the body and paint except for a small crimp in the front end where something may have fallen on it (that should be an easy fix). The vehicle saw 130,000 miles before the restoration, so it’s safe to assume that most everything could now reset to zero.

A prior owner put on headers and a Borla exhaust in a move to soup it up a bit. And there’s no radio, so perhaps an aftermarket stereo was on the checklist. There is no battery in the car, so we don’t know if there will be any issues starting it (why didn’t the seller do this simple thing?). With luck, maybe it could be made roadworthy in a couple of weekends.

A nice basic car with factory ac. I would buy it for a daily before a Hundai or any other electronic jellybean. Take care of it and beat the depreciation.

That is the rarest front seat combo out there for a 68 Cameron. Swap in some standard buckets and send that seat to Barrett Jackson. Some collector will pay for that half of the $30,000 asking price for the car just to say he has something his rich buddies don’t.

I never understand stories about projects left unfinished just before the finish line ! Seems easier to just finish it and then sell it. I can see other looks to be projects in the background pics. Could be the answer ?

I wonder how much rust is on this car. I noticed rust bubbles around the roof edge. Bet there are more elsewhere.

Where does it say in the Ebay ad that it has Borla exhaust?
