Anniversary Edition: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 400 4-Speed

Few muscle cars carry as much late-’70s swagger as the 1979 Pontiac Trans Am, and this particular example goes a step further — it’s a genuine Anniversary Edition with the numbers-matching 400 cubic-inch V8 and 4-speed manual transmission. Listed by a private seller here on eBay, it’s presented as a mostly original, well-preserved example that’s already had a fair amount of mechanical work done, leaving the next owner with an excellent foundation for a restoration.

According to the seller, both the engine and transmission have been rebuilt, and the motor was brought back to stock specifications. Dyno and build documentation are included, which should give any buyer peace of mind. The radiator has been replaced with an aluminum unit, though the original is being refurbished and will come with the sale. The air conditioning has also been updated by a previous owner and is said to be working well — a big plus for anyone who actually plans to drive and enjoy the car.

This Trans Am’s odometer reads 82,737 miles, and the seller describes it as a solid, reliable car that’s mainly been used for car shows over the last couple of years. The current owner has collected a long list of original and replacement parts, all of which are included in the sale. Among them are a replacement dash pad, correct seat covers, a replacement steering wheel, and the original radio, which has already been rebuilt and is ready to install.

The previous owner reportedly handled brakes and suspension repairs, so most of the heavy lifting has already been completed mechanically. The seller is straightforward about what remains — the car needs paint and bodywork to reach its full potential. They’ve even held onto original GM eagle and fender decals still in their factory tubing, ensuring the car can be finished to authentic Anniversary Edition standards.

Offered as a complete package, the seller is not splitting up the car and parts, preferring it to go to someone who’ll appreciate the value of the full set. With its rebuilt 400/4-speed drivetrain, documented history, and collection of original parts, this Trans Am represents a rare opportunity to own one of Pontiac’s most collectible late-era muscle cars — and finish it exactly the way it deserves.

Desirable’79 with the rare 400 W72. Not perfect, but clean overall. Will be interesting to see what it sells for.

Moat of these are very low mileage. Glad to see someine actually drove this car and enjoyed that true Pontiac 400 with a 4 speed.

1,817 of the 7,500 10ths had the W72/4-speed combo. The rest were obviously the Olds 403 with the automatic. So about 24%. Rare indeed, though higher than the normal Trans Am population, where only about 9% had the W72

Some blackwall tires can be had for close to 1/3! the price of RWL tires, tho these cars should have RWL’s.
