Apart Since 1973: 1965 Morgan Plus Four

This 1965 Morgan Plus 4 has been off the road since 1973, when it was disassembled. Sitting now in Winter Park, Florida, with a brand new factory Morgan tub sitting on the frame, this seems like a great project to take over. Thanks to Jim S. for sending us this great find! It’s listed for sale here on eBay with a buy-it-now of $8,900 but offers are being entertained.

The rotten wood apparent in this picture is the reason the car was taken apart. I’m surprised, though, that the engine was disassembled too at only just over 30k miles. Nonetheless, there’s probably more in parts here than the buy-it-now figure, especially the brand new tub. The seller says the wood framework isn’t any good and that’s why the tub was purchased. All the steel panels (fenders, hood, cowl) are solid with minimal surface rust.

As you can see, the Triumph wet-liner four is in a lot of pieces. No telling how much exposure this has had, or whether there was an engine issue that took it off the road as well. The good thing is that being a wet-liner engine, you can replace the pistons and the cylinders. The cylinder head looks like it’s either been stored well or had some machine shop work done previously, and the seller says it needs valves and exhaust seats.

The Sprite in the background may have something to do with the need to sell, as the ad states that more room is needed for a race car. The frame looks solid, or at least as solid as any Morgan frame ever looks. The seller tells us that they are missing the seats, steering wheel, windshield and the +4 badge from the front cowl. I think those wouldn’t be impossible to obtain; if you want to write a large enough check, I’m sure Morgan can get them for you. As I’ve looked this car over, especially considering that I have a “spare” TR3 engine, I’ve decided it’s too close to me to be comfortable for my budget–in other words, I’ll be looking closely at this one. Will you?
