Apple Red Rarity: 1992 GMC Typhoon

The GMC Typhoon is one the more collectible vehicles to emerge from the 1990s, and represents a moment in time wherein manufacturers like GM seemed far more inclined to take chances. The idea of a major car company today producing a hot-rod pickup truck and SUV – both with fairly utility – seems near unfathomable as the focus has shifted almost entirely to high-volume, high-technology models. This Typhoon is a rare find in Apple Red paint with Argent Gray cladding and is listed here on eBay with bids to $15,700 and no reserve.

While I realize nostalgia is a drug many of us are hooked on as it relates to older vehicles, there’s a lot to be said for the engineering prowess on display with a truck like this. It’s not to say that modern performance vehicles aren’t superior in every way, but when you take into account the era in which the Typhoon was made and the achievements made with this model, it’s a very impressive specimen: turbocharged and intercooled Vortec V6, limited-slip differential, upgraded brakes and wheels, and a novel rear air suspension system (only found on the Typhoon.)

The Typhoon could hit 60 miles per hour in well under six seconds, which was blisteringly fast for the early 90s, but especially for an SUV. This was not a lightweight or nimble vehicle, yet GM was able to make the Typhoon an exceptional handler and straight-line performer. Again, there was no real template for this in 1992, so my hat is off to the GM engineering team that figured out how to build a bonkers truck like this. The interior is standard GM fare, which is to say, not all that nice. The leather buckets are still in good shape.

Mileage is just over 105,000, and the seller confirms that this truck actually sees regular use – so you’re going to see some mild indications of wear and tear. The bigger news is that it appears to be in stock condition, which is a rarity among Typhoons and Syclones as these turbocharged beasts respond well to upgrades. The seller confirms the truck is in clean, rust-free condition otherwise, and given there is no reserve, it looks like a potential bargain for the savvy 90s collector car shopper.

Very nice find, Jeff, in a seldom seen color and body spec.

Everyone needs to take one of these for the obligatory 1,320 foot stop light dash, they are that mind-blowing fast!

Yezzir, worth every penny and then some. The performance of the Typhoon and Cyclone can’t be underestimated, either would burn a contemporary Ferrari 348 in the quarter mile, and in the Typhoon you could have 3 friends along for the ride. I’d love to have one of these, and I didn’t know you could get one in red. Really cool suv and someone is getting a heckuva sweet ride for not a lot of money.

That’s only the current bid, 16k. I am sure when it’s all said and done the buyer will be spending a bit more money to get the keys and title.

Wondering if the doughnuts are from the Typhoon. Wouldn’t doubt it. Nice truck.

Full frame is the most important aspect. People have been putting SBCs in S10s since they started production. Same old hot rod recipe, small vehicle and a powerful motor.
GM let it happen under their supervision despite government oversight.

AutoCheck score of 36 against a range of 47-66. I am not familiar with AutoCheck vs. Carfax but I would be asking a lot of questions.
