Arizona Squarebody: 1994 Ford Bronco XL

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Ford Bronco may be enjoying a rebirth of sorts with the latest generation model popping up in suburban strip malls and high school parking lots everywhere, but it’s the last gasp of the fifth-generation model that holds the most appeal among enthusiasts of a certain age. The final refresh before the Bronco entered its first retirement featured a few different upgrades to make it well-suited to being a classic truck you can use like a daily driver, and this 1994 model here on eBay has under 100,000 miles and long-term Arizona ownership working in its favor. Bidding is currently at $10,300 with the reserve unmet.

The swan song of the Bronco may often be confused with its highway escapades when a certain Al Cowling was behind the wheel, but the reality of what marked the end of Ford’s celebrated square-body was far less exciting. As it became clear more buyers wanted a four-door SUV as their daily driver versus one that required squeezing into a rear seat, Ford simply kept the lights on for a bit longer. The front grill and headlight treatment got a refresh, the driver got a steering wheel with an airbag, and the ho-hum Nite edition was added to the lineup. Otherwise, it was clear that Ford didn’t see much point to over-investing in the Bronco – the celebrity endorsement from O.J. notwithstanding.

The seller’s truck may have mileage that is on the lower side, but it’s not exceptionally low; still, the condition on display here is better than expected for a vehicle not put away as a future collectible. It’s obvious the Bronco was used like any other daily driver, but it was used by a careful owner given how clean the body and the interior are. The cloth bucket seats are in very good shape as are the carpets, and despite being an Arizona vehicle, I see no evidence of rampant sun fading or cracked plastics. I’m surprised to see crank windows in this truck as I thought the Bronco had standard power windows at this point – and it’s an odd juxtaposition with the power lumbar support on the seats.

The 5.0L V8 engine is a workhorse and dirt cheap to own. Making a respectable 205 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque, the Bronco can certainly keep up with modern traffic even if it’s hardly a rocket ship. Of course, there was a time when our expectations were a bit more measured and no one felt that a 4WD brick of a truck needed an engine capable of delivering a 0-60 time in the low 4-second range, but that’s the world we find ourselves in today. This Bronco looks like a fine option for a truck you can use with some regularity and not see any major loss in value in the meantime.

I was kind of surprised to see the nice seats combined with crank windows and a vinyl floor covering instead of carpet. Maybe it was special ordered? These rims are my favorites on this generation Ford Bronco and half ton models.

Those cranks look like they were added – in a truck like this they would’ve been black plastic.

Those wheels are awesome – forged aluminum and made by Alcoa. They have become valuable and prized. I ran a set for years on my early Bronco. They look good on every vehicle they fit.

No bells and whistles with an xl package. I had a nineteen eighty eight bronco that was custom ordered through Ford. Then I custom ordered another in 94. The 94 I ordered came with the Eddie Bower package, which was a step above the XLT, but it had a 2 tone paint job. Block heater, lock out hubs, plow package which Gave me two extra shocks in the front, tow package And a fiberglass running board with lights. Both of my broncos also had the 351 motor in it. I would like to get another one someday.

Those seats have apparently been swapped in from a filimar generation F-series with XLT trim. XL would have been vinyl with likely a black rubber mat floor covering. Also, door window cranks are aftermarket as OEM X was flat black plastic.

I’m still waiting for that one old guy who hasn’t seen Mecum on tv, and doesn’t have the interwebs. Who’s still thinking about selling his rust free 78-90’s Bronco for under $10,000. LOL

Surprisingly- still plenty out there under $10k but most aren’t nice. We struggled to sell my parents’90 bricknose at the height of Covid pricing – 100% rust free AZ truck. I think he ended up getting about $6k for it. These aero/OBS/OJB trucks bring the most of the 3rd-5th gen trucks on the average.

Mecum, Barret-Jackson, any of those auctions. All they have done is astronomically driven the price up on vehicles that the average Joe can no longer get into the hobby. And it’s caused rust-bucket junk to be dug up out of the ground or back woods and sold as if there was gold in the rocker panels (if the rocker panels are even there, anymore).

Todd Z you don’t know what your talking about!! Power window were standard on XLT’s . Apparently this is a Standard Bronco with swapped seats!!

What did I state that was incorrect? Nothing! This is an XL – or “Standard Bronco” as you call it. I didn’t state anything about power windows in my comments (and yes, they were standard in XLTs). I agree that the seats were probably swapped in this truck.

You stated that window cranks were added which is impossible if the truck was power windows!! The tracks are totally different.

The body style is what is commonly called OBS or old body style not the square box look. The crank handles would be correct for a XL trim level which would the basic trim level and the same goes for the rubber floor mat

@Enrico Mandragona – you need to re-read what I originally stated in my first post:

“Those cranks look like they were added – in a truck like this they would’ve been black plastic.”

I used the word “added” in the context of the existing window cranks replacing the original black plastic cranks this truck would’ve had with the XL package. I didn’t say anything about power windows, nor did I imply it originally had power windows. I’m well aware that it didn’t come with power windows.

I never said that you said anything about power windows!! I said it because it wouldn’t be on a XL model!! The word ,”Added” is now being taken out of context!! How is one to surmise how your implying Added!!?? By the owner or the factory 🤷 Don’t patronize me I’ve been around a while.

Yes, and I totally agree they (power windows) wouldn’t be on a XL model. I’m still not sure where you’re coming up with your initial slandering of me, “Todd Z you don’t know what your talking about!!

There was absolutely nothing incorrect about my initial post that you replied to. Perhaps the word “replaced” might have been a better choice than “added” with regards to the window cranks, but added still works fine in this instance.

I’m not patronizing you – I’m trying to figure out exactly what beef you have with me and what you feel I don’t know what I’m talking about. I’ve been around awhile too!

I’m preparing 2 more copies of my bestselling book on the history of the Ford Bronco to send out tomorrow. Perhaps you’d like to purchase a copy as well? :)

      Good night.

Yes the word added was the key word! Sorry if you thought I was jumping on your case however with the barn find articles even the author gets allot of details wrong with certain vehicles which being a car show judge I get pretty anal about! Yes I’ll check your book out. Will it be at Barns & Noble?
