ATV Tractor? 1988 Yamaha Terrapro Moto-4

Now this is interesting: a rear-wheel drive Yamaha ATV meant to be more of a “tractor” than an off-road fun vehicle, by pulling various implements, such as the mower seen on it here. This 1988 Yamaha Terrapro is listed here on Facebook Marketplace in Markesan, WI, and they’re asking $2,800. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Lothar… of the Hill People for the well-groomed tip!

Here’s a screenshot of the seller’s video, showing this unique Terrapro in action, mowing way too much grass than I’d ever want to be involved with. Two hours of walking behind a mower is enough for me; mowing this giant field would be a prison sentence, whether I’m riding or walking/pushing. There isn’t a lot of info out there on these things, but what I’ve seen, they were only made for the 1988 model year.

I’m all about weird machines, and this one fits right in. It appears to have been somewhat well-used, but hopefully not abused. The seller says it runs great, and the mower works great as well. In the off chance that the next owner wants to restore or at least redo this one, new decals are available on eBay.

The Yamaha Terrapro Moto-4 is said to have been the first ATV with a PTO (power take-off), and Yamaha offered two mowers for this l’il rig, a Rough-Cut 42″ mower, the RC-42, and a Finish-Mower with a 48″ cut, the FM-48. It’s hard to tell from the seller’s tiny vertical (sigh) photos, but this is the FM-48. The mowers were manufactured for Yamaha by a company called Woods, said to be the top supplier of tractor-powered mowers in this era. There was also a sprayer attachment with either 50 or 100-gallon capacity and 15 or 24-foot boom lengths.

This Terrapro is powered by a Yamaha 348-cc four-stroke SOHC single-cylinder with 14.5 horsepower and 10 hp going to the PTO. It’s backed by a 5-speed dual-range manual transmission, able to reverse from any gear, and driven by a drive shaft and a lockable differential. I would love to own this; they are incredibly rare to find, especially with one of the implements included. Have any of you heard of the Yamaha Terrapro Moto-4?

I’d say you know you’re a redneck but I’m not even sure the redneck mind could fathom this

This is really neat and very versatile. Mow the lawn, top off the tank with go go juice when you’re done and go hit some trails. I like it!!!

Markesan, you say( oh here it comes), hauled a LOT of canned goods out of there. Sadly, you want another “sign of the times”, Del Monte has closed that plant while filing for bankruptcy, Del Monte, folks, sorry, there’s actually merit to this post,,
Before I moved to Colorado, I had, HAD, a friend in upstate NY I spent a summer with. He attended several auctions regularly, and we came home with one of these. The author is right, not much info, but I did find, they began in 1985 with a 200cc motor, like the one I worked on, and was the 1st 4 wheel ATV, after the dismal 3 wheelers, but NOT all wheel drive. Yep, that’s right, I didn’t believe it either, but these are RWD only. A “2×4”, as it were, and kudos to the author for not calling it a 4×4. My friend got it cheap, but just figured all 4 wheelers were AWD, HA! SURPRISE!! I don’t remember dual range, PTO, or 5 speed and reverse, newer features, and it needed a lot of work, but surprisingly, we had no problem getting parts. Like all this stuff, amazes me with what has happened to ATVs, heck, some are nicer than my Jeep, but it all started here.
Note: you’ll miss the AWD, trust me.

My family had a non-Terrapro 1985 Moto 4 in the same shade. Fun little thing on our farm. No reverse but if you weren’t strong enough to push it backward you didn’t need to be riding it.

Not surprised its already sold, makes me wonder if we will see it again soon on another site for more money. I have been on the fence about getting a John deer or bobcat but the $20+ k is a hard pill for new so finding something like this would have been awesome

true multipurpose. Like my ’66 bronk (hwy/off rd). If mowing I’d wanna ‘wider path’ but this is good too. Woods equipment all over the property so i’d trust that.
We just got 2 “atvs” for free, Yamaha & a Kowie. They look solid but we have better equipment for mow’n sno. (Case 448 & cj7). When gone over they’ll B for the kids or sale. Today most want ‘the sideB’ side’, big 4seat 4WD “utv”. I think that’s how we got these… sports? still atv; more work like? utv.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news for a potential buyer, but the seller has it listed as “SOLD” in Facebook Marketplace.

I have never seen one of these before. I have a 2005 Honda Rancher 350 with a snowplow and a little 3 or 4 foot trailer I tow behind it. It’s great for plowing my driveway and moving stuff around my yard but of course it doesn’t have a PTO so I have to have a tractor for mowing the lawn.
