Baby Moons! 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 390 V8

Ford redesigned their full-size cars in 1960, and each edition thereafter through 1964 would be a styling evolution of the prior year’s model. The ‘64 offerings included this sweet Galaxie 500 Sport Coupe with a 390 cubic inch V8 and an aftermarket 5-speed manual transmission. It’s been somewhat restored to its original fit and finish and looks like a solid runner. Located in Yakima, Washington, this white over turquoise beauty is available here on craigslist for $20,000.

The Galaxie nameplate was born out of the Space Race in the late 1950s. From 1959 to 1974, the Galaxie played a significant role in the FOMOCO product roster. The 1964 Galaxie 500 would be its last as Top Dog, as the LTD debuted in 1965 as a luxury version of that popular car. But try as they might, the Galaxie never was able to dethrone its primary competition, the Chevrolet Impala.

We don’t know how long the seller has owned this Ford, but it looks great with 11,300 miles on the odometer. Logic would have it that the real mileage is 111,300. It has been repainted in a turquoise color that closely matches the original finish, and the redone upholstery is also in the vein of the original materials. We don’t know if the 390 V8 is factory, but the 5-speed may have replaced a 1964 4-speed. The battery and starter solenoid are new, and the brake master cylinder has been upgraded.

From all angles, this Ford looks great, and the Baby Moon wheel covers with chrome trim rings help make it really stand out. If you’re looking for a weekend cruiser or a Cars & Coffee candidate, this Galaxie may be hard to beat. And there are fewer of them around compared to an Impala of the same vintage. A thumbs up to “Curvette” for another fine tip!

You can choose a 1964 Galaxie with a 390 and a manual for 20k or you can choose a 1964 Galaxie with a 390 and a manual for 40k ,not a hard decision. They are both in great condition

We have a bumper crop of hardtop ’64 Galaxies today. Turquoise with a 390/5-speed (!) Sounds like a blast. Just practice with those brakes.

I owned several 64 Galaxies back in the 60’s & 70’s. I loved the body style, I spent hours just looking at the lines in admiration. The weakest point was the left rear axel bearing. It held the axel inside the housing, when it failed (and they did) you lost everything, no brakes, no power, you were at the mercy of the road. Changing to a dual master cylinder at least gives you some breaking power. I love idea of a 5 speed manual, likely a Tremec, transmission. The turquoise color is my favorite. Bench seat is very nice if you have someone to sit close to you while cruising the streets. I believe $20k is a very fair price for this cool car.

Good idea with the brakes. I put a Wilwood dual reservoir master cylinder in my 66 F-100 pickup about 5 years ago, also redoing all brake parts. I used the 15/16 inch bore, as they suggested, along with two 10-pound inline residual valves. The drum brakes work fine as long as you are not around continual hills to heat them up.

I have a GREAT IDEA! Just buy both of them and let your feelings for the day and where you are going make the choice of which one to drive. Why not make life simple when you can.
