Abandoned Shop Project: ’74 Porsche 911 Targa

This 1974 Porsche 911 Targa is believed to be a Euro-spec car that has been hidden in the back of a specialist garage until recently. The car bears the scars of more than one bad repaint and is missing a number of parts, but the seller believes it is a very complete project for the price. It has a factory replacement motor and rust along the front of the pan. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $6K and the reserve unmet.

The 911 was originally a very pretty combo of yellow over black when new. Now, it clearly has been repainted black and the red front bumper is either signs of another repaint or simply stuck on as a temporary fix. The rear bumper is missing, along with the grills in the engine lid. The seller notes that there’s other components missing as well, including emblems, mirrors, and “…several other little bits and pieces.” This includes the factory rear wiper, a desirable and rare option that this car came with.

The speedometer in kilometers is the clearest indication this was originally a European market car. There are usually other benefits associated with this, whether it’s less restrictive emissions equipment or lighter weight due to fewer safety bars in the doors. It should also have H4 lighting instead of crappy U.S. sealed beams. The Targa is certainly rough, but with a motor, transmission, complete interior and wheels still attached, those aspects and the European-spec configuration make it more appealing.

The seller notes the engine is a factory-documented replacement 2.7L mill, so while not numbers matching, the documentation helps. The seller notes there is rust on the car, stating “…From what I could see the majority is along the front of the pan.  I found two additional rust spots under the drivers side.” The floors are said to be solid, but that was determined by pressing on them to see if they were soft – make your own deductions. Overall, there’s minimal risk at the current bid, but caution is urged as you start getting into the five-figure range.

It’s hard not to be critical but this needs a complete tear down and Under the undercoat is rust in many places .

I hope the flipper get his fortune and gold as the new owner will drop 20-30 to find pieces missing and emblems plus interior.

One might say the wheel brand many times
upon stripping the body down to rust.

Let me repeat the seller comment “this is rough” and I still want gold for it” 😜

Too bad. Look long and hard at the last 3 pictures in the listing and then multiply your rust estimate by a factor of ‘a lot’. The last pic suggests there is much rust in the pan, and probably a lot more under that thick asphalt undercoating.

And don’t forget to consider why the headlights are taped to the front fenders.

This will take many “PMU’s”. Porsche monetary units, to bring back to life! A PMU, is $1000 US.
