Backyard Find: 1963 Porsche 356 Super

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1963 Porsche 356 is a claimed survivor that was only recently relinquished by its long-time second owner, who purchased the car in 1986 and kept it parked in his backyard for the last several years. The 356 features the desirable 1600 “S” engine that is numbers matching along with a rarely seen houndstooth interior. Find the 356 here on eBay with bidding $40K and no reserve.

The last owner purchased the 356 in 1986 and used the car for many years before parking it in his Nevada backyard. The 356 would still be started and run to ensure it didn’t become a lost cause, but obviously some basic reconditioning was still required. Regardless, this is a car that at no point entered basketcase territory, and is the type of vehicle you want to seek out when looking for unrestored examples.

Paint-wise, the 356 wears a Heron Gray exterior with a very rare houndstooth fabric inside. The seller believes the pattern to be original, and it matches nicely with the tan dash pad and door panels. The floors are said to be sound and the only noticeable rust is observed in the battery tray area. Frankly, the 356 is the kind of car that should never be restored given it has been carefully preserved up to this point.

The dry Nevada location certainly helps with this, and combined with the long-time second owner’s ongoing use (no matter how restricted), it’s no wonder the 356’s desirable “S” specification engine still runs. The fuel pump was replaced and the brakes freshened up prior to sale, and the seller notes it runs and drives without issue. Expect to see bidding keep running up, likely beyond what the second owner was paid.

The interior fabric is actually a plaid, not a houndstooth pattern.

A VW Karmann Ghia looks lot better IMO for 1/10 the price! lol

Would like to see some pics of the battery box and the underbelly looks grungy up by the gas tank. Of course when dropping big coins you would want someone to check it out for you. Low Feedback. Presents nice! Look carefully for ironworms, and good luck to the new owner!

I’d rather look at the bucket behind it. Also I thought houndstooth was a different pattern than that. That just looks like plaid.

One drive in my uncle’s 356 in the Berkeley hills in 1978 planted this classic forever in my brain. Still the most soul-changing drive of my life.

You are correct. You should have seen the turd that just sold for over 60k on BAT.

Even though i dislike what BaT is doing to inflate the collector market, these have long been stupid unattainable….guy should have listed it in their Premium auctions.

Hiring the guard was a great idea seeing how valuable old VWs have become.

” Oh yes Sir, I love old Porsche’s. Yes, I’m going to lightly restore it and leave it to my children so they can appreciate this classic. Yes, it’s my life’s dream to own a 356 S. Of course, I’ll give you twenty thousand, that seems fair.”

I saw one of these on the road this week, its nice that im not alone in my assessment. I can think of a lot cheaper cars that do it for me, but I respect those that like them to each his own.

Del – they’re crazy smart. VW and Porsche designed by same guy then son, now grandchildren. Nobody thought they’d make 4-door front-engined executive cars, SUVs or electric cars either. And yet…..
I’ve got a friend that has a bunch of Porsches. 2 of these, a repro 356 convert with a 911S engine (air-cooled), a 924, a Cayenne V6, and just bought a Cayman S. We both like the repro best because we are tall and it has longer foot wells. (And it goes like heck !) BTW, he bought both the 356 1600S and the B NEW.
