Bargain Cruiser? 1974 Pontiac Bonneville

Pinemist Green is a perfect color for this 1974 Pontiac Bonneville. Nothing says the 1970s like green or brown, big chrome bumpers, and gigantic 19-foot-long American cars that get 11 mpg. There’s some work to do on this big cruiser, but if you’re up for it, you can find it posted here on craigslist in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania, and the seller is asking $4,000. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Mitchell G. for the tip!

$4,000?! You can’t get anything for four grand anymore! I got incredibly excited seeing this car, this is my era, and I love these giant four-door luxury sedans from any manufacturer. We don’t see as many Pontiac Bonnevilles from this era for some reason, but they’re beautiful, despite the big 5 mph bumpers. You can see some missing trim on both sides, unfortunately, and there’s some real damage to mess with on the right side quarter panel.

GAAA! Dang those texting drivers. No, we don’t know what caused this damage, but hopefully it can be fixed, along with sourcing and installing new bumper filler material. And then painting the whole car, and, and, and… Ok, that $4,000 asking price doesn’t seem like such a bargain now. Still, with the nice wheels and a nice interior with power windows and power locks, I hope this car gets fixed. The odometer shows 41,556 miles, and the seller lists the mileage as being 41,000.

The beautiful “Bonneville Block Tweed” seat fabric looks almost perfect everywhere, other than some likely heat damage on the top of the back seat. Otherwise, man, what a beautiful interior. I love seeing those power window buttons, as we never had fancy features on our vehicles, even in a 1970 Olds 98 my dad had. The fifth-generation Bonneville was made from 1971 through 1976 in both two-door and four-door sedans, but what if they had made a convertible…

A few hours of detailing this engine and engine compartment would have made a big difference in the presentation, but that’s usually the case. This is Pontiac’s 400-cu.in. OHV V8 with a four-barrel carburetor, which was factory-rated at 200 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when new. It’s backed by a THM-400, and the seller says it runs, drives, and stops well, has new brakes/calipers/hoses on the front, a new alternator, plugs, and transmission service. Would you fix the damage and repaint this Bonneville, or just keep it maintained and drive it?

My old man had a ’72. Driving drunk, he wrecked it and bought a ’74 like this. Wrecked that one too and got a Grand Prix next. How did we survive the ’70s with all that DUI going on? Anyway, it used to bug me how the clear lenses under the headlights had a lighted segment and an obvious fake segment that didn’t light up. Funny what you fixate on when you’re small.

The block tweed pattern is nice. People don’t seem to care for the medium green interior that year but I always thought it was easy on the eyes. The 400-4bbl should keep up with traffic.

This brings back memories. My auntie gave us her 1974 Pontiac Bonneville with a 400 in it. It was green inside and out as well except she had hers repainted, and it was more of a metallic Jade green and did not have a vinyl top. She had the steel wheels with the hubcaps and that car eventually was given to me. Just out of high school I was happy to get any car and this car was a great cruiser. At the time my sister had a 1981 Trans Am that my brother managed to total, but I grabbed the hood scoop off of it before it got scrapped and grafted it onto this car and made it functional. My car only had the two barrel carburetor though, but it had some decent torque. This one with the four barrel carburetor must be even better! Although it wasn’t a super fast car I always used to try to street race people off the line at red lights. It would surprise a few people. Was built like a tank, pretty thick fenders. Someone had sideswiped our car and I tried to pound out the dent from the trunk and it wouldn’t budge. Very different than the metal that’s used on cars now.

Perfect car for the Drive In this summer. I would also daily drive it as well.

Oh-Oh, No fanbelt on the A/C compressor and the belt groove is rusty.
