While surfing the local craigslist, I happened upon a car that is something of a rarity. It seems like a lot of “barn finds” for sale these days are cars that the seller found in a barn, cleaned up, put some new wheels and tires on, and is selling after they’ve had their fun. While it was once a barn find, now that it’s been back on the road and “freshened up,” is it really still a barn find? What we are looking at here is a barn find that is for sale and is actually still in the barn! At least, it was; most of the other photos show the car sitting in a yard, though the square tires show that it has had nothing done to it other than being relocated. Found here on craigslist in Charlotte, North Carolina, the seller is asking $3,250 or best offer.
The seller states that this is a one-owner car with “a ton of documentation,” and while that may be true, the pictures show that at least a little documentation is present, with handwritten service records up until December 1986. The ad states that the car was parked in 1988, and based on the photos I believe it. It would appear, based on interior condition and records, that this car has 144,000 miles on it, and was likely in decent shape when parked.
The seller states that the car has only a little rust on the passenger side rocker, and based on the below photo of the underside, I would assume there isn’t much other rust. It is unclear whether the seller is the original owner, or if he/she is selling it for the original owner in question. Either way, older Beetles in relatively unmolested condition are currently appreciating, and with a cult following like no-other, Beetles are always in style. Although this car is likely beyond being preserved, the lack of severe rust makes it an excellent restoration candidate! The seller notes that extra parts, keys, documentation, and a spare tire will be included. Do you think you can help Herbie ride again?

It had ’68 bumpers anyway, so I was suspicious about the year.
Gotta love the early bugs, take a licking and keep on ticking.
I like what appears to be a home made bracket for a roof rack. My Sister and her Husband owned a 69 Bug with a factory roof rack and the mounts did not look like those at all.
Oh Well it would be worth redoing in my opinion.
I’d really want to see what the pan and mounts look like on this one. The pans back then didn’t have any type of protection against rust except the primer and paint.
I have a 67 for sale exterior and interior restored. Great pan. All rust welded fixed. New paint and chrome. No work needed to motor/trans. I had a brain hemmorage. Now can’t drive. Wife doesn’t want. Asking $10,000
Not a 66 or 67 but a 65
Bumpers are incorrect, but everything else about it is ’67. Probably the very best year of Beetle to have. None of the emissions controls and no safety padded dash and headrests, no big bumpers, but all the good improvements like 1500 engine, 12 volt system and widened rear track with improved suspension geometry and anti-roll bar (although still swing axles). I agree that more would need to be known about rust issues. The floor pan is easier to fix than the body sills so the comment about ‘rocker panel rust’ is a significant concern.
Deleted….
It’s been deleted from Craigslist. guess it didn’t last long.
It looks more like a 66, the hubcaps are correct for that year(66) but are the headlights correct? Also there is no emblem on the trunklid. 67 emblem says “volkswagen’, 66 says “1300”. I had 3 66’s and a 67.
