UPDATE – This 1967 Jeepster Convertible is listed for sale again with a huge drop in price. They have it posted here on craigslist in El Mirage, Arizona, and they’re now asking $3,500. Check out the photos again and let us know your thoughts on this one at the new price. Thanks to PaulG for sending in this tip!

FROM 12/22/2021 – This is an interesting find and somewhat rare and unusual. We have seen many Jeepster Commandos and/or Jeep Commandos over the years but this model is a 1967 Jeepster Convertible. It reportedly was a one-year-only model with several styling differences and it looks like a fun project. The seller has it posted for sale here on craigslist in El Mirage, Arizona and they’re asking $6,500 or offer.

With a 101-inch wheelbase, this C-101 Jeepster is a first-year model from when the line was reintroduced in 1966 for the 1967 model year. From what I found about the early Jeepster Commandos, the 1967 model was referred to as the Jeepster, not the Jeepster Commando even though it was a part of the Commando line if that makes any sense?

The Commando series included a basic roadster, a pickup, and a wagon. The Convertible was the top model, price-wise. After 1967, they were referred to as the Jeepster Commando until the early-70s when they became the Jeep Commando.

You can see three of the several features in the photo above that reportedly make this model a Jeepster Convertible. The built-in spare tire carrier on the rear bumper, two-tone paint, and a stainless steel trim piece that ran around the upper body line. Another feature was having quarter windows behind the side roll-up windows. I really like those faux knock-off wheel covers, I hope that the seller has the other four of them.

This example is a barn find according to the seller who reportedly bought it from “Jeepster Jim” and realized that it’s too much of a project for them to dig into. It has an automatic transmission which would have been a GM-sourced Turbo-Hydramatic 400. There is rust to deal with, with the worst of it being on the passenger floor but there is also body rust.

The non-running engine is a Buick Dauntless 225 cubic-inch V6 which would have had 160 horsepower. This looks like a very restorable Jeepster and it would be great to own if it were in operating condition and then just pick away at restoring it. Have any of you owned a 1967 Jeepster?

Had a 67 Jeepster Commando Roadster Convertible, blue like the one in the picture next to the yellow one. Owned it for 18 years then lost to Superstorm Sandy. Loved it, always turned heads and brought smiles. 3 speed manual and 2 spd transfer case. That v6 was awesome lots of low end torque too.

Like I posted elsewhere, I was a mechanic at a Jeep dealership, when this was new. I never heard the term Commando, applied to this Jeepster. In my opinion, the red and white version presents as the most ‘striking ‘.

These were a classic swing and a miss. Nobody wanted them then, and with no comments, the same holds true today. Brooks Stevens, the designer, who,if ANYONE had a vision for the future, it was him, envisioned post war Americans driving sports car like vehicles, top down, scarf flailing in the wind, and Jeep was a household name, how could it fail? Well, trouble was, people never associated a Jeep with something classy, a CJ was what people thought of, even though, these were considered one of the 1st SUV’s, Americans were slow to catch on. Today, a modern Rubicon isn’t really much different than these. Today, anything “Jeep” sells, regardless of how poor they are to drive.

    I must B ‘no body’.

There’s a split production…not much difference in shell ’48/50 split to 66/’73. Yeah 16 yrs tech upgrade but same vehicle to me. 3rd gen can B seen w/a stamped out chrome grill last 2 yrs or so (justa face lift, not really 3rd gen)…

These look great, perform as well as their peers w/a small lift/bigger wheel.
Unfortunately not as adaptable in ‘style’ as a vert stays that way. Not easy to convert like a bronk or others back to hrd top (& vise versa – 1/2 cab, wagon, vert). Not sure the w.shield flips dwn all 8 yrs (last 2 named commando did not I believe) but the jeepster (Overland/Willys) did all 3 yrs (2WD only).

I’m out here in the outfield & I see the ball’s over the fence here…

Friend had one as a “summer car” at their “cottage” in Maine, just local roads, some steep hills, plenty of power from the V 6, a nice drive in the summer at 35 – 45 mph. Not so nice on the Interstate at 65 mph, would do it all day, which the earlier Jeep engines would not, but the noise and wind, even with top and windows up, were punishing. And it was not really meant for “off road” (which means dirt road now) use either, so a limited use vehicle.

Back in the 1990s there was a used car/ classic car dealer near where I lived. I bought a 1972 Oldsmobile 98 Regency and a 1976 Cadillac Coupe de Ville from him. He had a “67 Jeepster convertible, white on white on white behind one of his buildings. I really wanted that thing. But it was in deplorable shape, rusted through, non running, just too much work.
This yellow and white one is in much better shape. And it’s 30 years older now

There is a earlier year one here in town with the peaked vertical grill, late fifties? Yellow and black, black top and interior, pro street, tubbed with a 350 Chevy and automatic. A very, very nice car that the owner built and enjoyed.

    don’t 4get the 1st gen (2WD).
A small lift, bigger tires – some great rest0mods out there. The vert is not convertible to hrd top (easily) but needs body work unlike some of the other Big Three. I’d geta hrd top & aft mrkt rag top for it.

Again, they can look sweet w/a lill wrk (AND be more useable off rd). Gofer what ever the BIN price is…
