The photos of this 1969 AMC Rebel SST two-door hardtop are pixelated, my apologies for that. The seller didn’t upgrade to the eBay option of allowing them to be enlarged for some reason so they’re a little stretched here. This is one good-looking car though and they have it listed here on eBay in Abingdon, Maryland. The current bid price is $8,500 and there is only a day left to get your bids in!
I’ll try to not be too hard on the seller of this Rebel for the quality of the photos, but there’s no sugarcoating it, they just aren’t that good. I’m sorry to call it like it is but they’re mostly cut-off partial photos and there are no photos of the driver’s side other than a couple of partial photos. I don’t think this trend will ever change even as people get fancier and more expensive phones with better cameras than Ansel Adams used. Bad photos or not, this is one rare and good-looking car.
Does it need work? All old cars need work but the seller says that this car is from Texas and there is absolutely no rust anywhere! Them’s mighty powerful words and if it’s true – and we have no reason not to believe the seller – that’s amazing for a car that was around when we first landed on the moon. This car was found in a barn that went along with a house that the seller purchased.
The seats have clearly been reupholstered which is unfortunate and this is basically it for overall interior photos, in keeping with the quality and quantity of photos included with this auction. There is no way of telling the condition of this car really without a personal inspection or without a call to the seller. I thought that the SST would have a floor console and floor shifter but apparently not, it must have just been an option. AMC made the Rebel for a shop teachers handful of years (four) from 1967 to 1970. They came in this presently popular two-door hardtop body style but also in four-door sedan and four-door wagon styles. We’ve seen a few of them here on Barn Finds but they don’t come up for sale too often. A great friend and former Barn Finds writer, David Wilk, had a 1968 Rebel convertible that he wishes he would have kept.
This clean engine is AMC’s 290 cubic-inch V8 which with a rebuilt two-barrel carb should pump out a healthy 200 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque. With its Borg-Warner three-speed automatic and its new brakes and fuel lines, along with “literally everything under the hood including the radiator”, this car sounds like it’s ready to go now or to bring up to the next level of restoration or preservation. The first thing I would do is to bring the interior back to a nice late-60s AMC brocade fabric which is still available at SMS Auto Fabrics. Are there any Rebel fans out there?
I like that red white and blue hi spec model.. Is it the rebel sst or machine ?
The Red/White and Blue Hi-spec model was 1970 only Rebel “THE MACHINE”. Though they were also offered in several other colors as well.
Thx Jim
There sure have been some nice Rambler/AMC vehicles lately. This year Rebel is one of my many Rambler favorites.
Nice Ansel Adams reference. At least the photos are not black and white
Love these cars. If everything checks out mechanically I would just respray the existing blue, get some “Machine”-style wheels and BFG white-letter tires,’and enjoy as is. More than likely you’ll be the only Rebel at the cars’n coffee.
My mom had a 68 Rebel SST. Buckets. Auto on the Floor. I t was ordered with a 390. They never picked it up and my dad got it for a nice price. Mom was a little PO’ed cause she was suppose to get a Ambassador wagon. After the first ride she took she was cool with it. She smoked many of the BIG THREE with it It was pretty BAD A$$ It got totaled when a LINCOLN Run a red light. Mom liked it so much that they tried to have it fixed but no go. She got a NEW 71 Matador. 304 What a POS. After many many years of RAMBLERS / AMC’s That one was the one that mom said no more RAMBLERS. She got a NEW Riviera the next year. She still talks about her Rebel Tho
I like the AMC cars, being from Milwaukee…but the Riviera is a HUGE upgrade!
As for this car, my great uncle had one. He was a factory worker from the city of South Milwaukee (not to be confused with the south side of Milwaukee). He later owned a body shop.
My great aunt approached me at my grandfather’s funeral, asking if I would be interested in an old car, she wasn’t sure what it was.
I went & looked at it, then bought it. I learned the hard way what it was like to try to buy parts for that car. What a nightmare lol! I like AMC but I will never own another!
I’ve got a Johan model kit of this (unbuilt).
Can’t decide which way to build it,funny car or stock.
I’ve always liked these. There was a customer who
bought a new ’68 Rebel in that deep red color, with white
stripes on the lower sides of it.Sharp looking car.
Me likey. Sorry you purists, that vinyl top gotta go.
Lovin’ me some AMC!
That’s beautiful. My parents had a 68 wagon and a 68 4 door, bot with the 6 bangers. If this was a stick, I’d really be bumming. Can have it either way but it is so nice to see one without rust and in such great shape.
What a terrible write up here in BF’s. This survivor has had extensive work. Rebuilt motor/trans. Brakes including new brake lines & fuel lines. Interior upholstery. Should fetch $10k. Usd. For my first. I had a 68 Ambassador 2 door. Also with the fold down bed…… ;)
That’s darn nice of you, Tyronne, thanks for your kind words…
Where do you see that we referred to this car as a survivor?
Great write up. Of course I am a shop teacher with all ten fingers, so I couldn’t be offended by that comment.
That’s the last time I use that one, Rob, my apologies.
Scotty, It’s all good fun. I love the shop teacher finger comments and have known several 8 to 9 fingered shop teachers.
That’s the problem… You didn’t! It hasn’t been bastardized in any way. Certainly not customized. What was important enough for you to go about. To spend 2-3 paragraphs on; “Photo quality” would have been more informative to note; Not just the rebuilt carb but. The rebuilt engine. The rebuilt transmission. Brakes rebuilt all around. New brake lines & new fuel lines. Are the photos good enough to jump on the road to go see it/buy it? I think so. Is the mechanical “upgrades” an asset? I also think so.
I wouldn’t call a car with that cheesy “reupholstery” job a survivor. Frankly, it is kinda rough and it needs full restoration.
The writers here are not professional journalists. I pay to be on this website once a month. I like it enough that I continue to pay. You are on it for free. Beggars can’t be choosers. No need to get nasty about a free service.
And the sellers pictures do suck lol!
Ends in one hour.
Sold for $9276! Great win.
