Wow – You had me at “needs floor pans, trunk pan, inner and outer wheel tub patches etc. bottom of the doors have rust also.” Seriously, though, I respect a seller who gives an honest reckoning of a vehicle’s condition. Truth-be-told this 1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 convertible in Powell, Tennessee has many good points for someone who’s not afraid of comprehensive metal replacement. That sub-set of the automotive world is watching, and the listing here on eBay has enticed at least 17 bids, setting the market value above $8,400 (reserve not met).
Though my personal daydream favors the facelifted 1969 Firebird, all the first-generation GM pony cars hit the spot with their compact size, available V8 engines, and youthful styling inside and out.
Not having to hunt down a console and other parts for the seemingly complete interior will take some of the sting out of that metal-fab. The three-speed floor-shifted manual transmission offers plenty of fun for top-down cruising, and the torque of 400 cubic inches makes the closer ratio four speed a mere nice-to-have. Before you bad-mouth the three-speed remember that the automatic would have given you three speeds as well, and with the manual you get to enjoy the control of when to change gears.
This non-original 400 motor and another one that’s prepped for a rebuild come with the car, plus some extra parts. This seller shows some class; many would hold back their cache of extra parts and sell them separately. This too helps offset the nightmares you may suffer… stabbing the floor and unibody with a screwdriver over and over, weeping as each thrust punctures the soft undercarriage. Oh the humanity! But some day later the sun will rise. You walk outside and twist the key on the classic that you gave second life. Your significant other, or perhaps a golden retriever, sits beside you, smiling, hair gently tossed by the wind as you make your way to the Piggly Wiggly for a quart of whole milk. What’s that dream worth to you?
Not bad for the Chevrolet twin .
Welding patches can be done but a shame on non orig small block 400 motor.
I am pretty sure the buckets are nom and probably 1969 seats
The three speed can be swapped since it’s a nom motor to four speed
Good luck to bidder
It’s a Pontiac400 no small block no big block just a Pontiac V8 from 287 to 455 same basic block and the seats maybe 67 I had close to the same interior on my 68 firebird the wood grain in the dash is part of the deluxe interior including the door panels and the seats.
Rays I give you the naming of the 400 engine as my reference to small was more to state to some folks whom see 400 and think “big block”.
The seats I still believe are not original and if you look for seat covers or even 67 model seats 💺 of Camaro or Firebird they did not exist with headrests like the 69 shown.
Check these original seats which are higher back but no headrests.

NOM =Not Original Manufacturer?
Non orig motor
Non original moron
If you want to compare this 400 to a factory small block 400. Try checking out a old 1974 Chevy PickUp, no not the GMC big block 402 which i still have one of. I use too have a quick (not so fast) 1170 ET Quarter mile 1967 RS/SS 4 speed M-22 Camaro with a NOE= not original engine 1974 truck small block 400. That would get up to 105 mph so quickly, then the long stroke valves would float badly. I felt like my car had Saturn 5 parachutes suddenly stopping it from accelerating above 105 mph because as i didn’t push in the clutch or hit the brakes. I was planning to put custom 202 valves plus stronger valve springs in it. But my red/orange flame job, polyurethane clear coat yellow Camaro was stolen from me back in 1980 in Glendale Ca.. Still looking for it, i still have the keys.
A local autobody guy who has had his own business since the 70s, has a 68(?) that he has started on it has a 400 and 4 speed. The thing was stupid clean a few years ago, but after sitting in his shop its covered in dust dirt, boxes, and mice took over the interior. what a waste.
I’m not a GM fan much. But I do like Pontiacs and Caddys. I would cruise this car, for sure.
If you have a fat wallet to pay for the bodywork or can do it yourself this Poncho would be a fun weekend cruiser.
I’m wondering how many readers can relate to Piggly Wiggly. that by itself made my day. Not too many of those around any more.
We had a Piggly Wiggly near my Junior High school and everyday after school we would stop walking home and buy a Coke and a Twinkie, so much for mom giving me lunch money. Thanks mom and yes it’s not there anymore.
The only one I know that is left is on HHI, but I’m sure there are others.
Please stop it guys. We never had Piggly Wiggly, Twinkies or Moon Pies in Australia. You’re making me jealous.
Try Amazon
Shop the Pig! They are all over in southern Wisconsin. Going to one today. Great T-shirts too.
I still see a Piggly Wiggly from time to time in small towns in NC and SC. But yes they are rare anymore. Most were shut down because of Food Lion and then Walmart finally did in the last few that still belonged to the Corp. Except of course for the ones that were owned out right. If I am not mistaken the PW Corp had an option to buy the store outright.
Like leiniedude says, there like cordwood here in Yah-Hey country. Shop there all the time. Good chow.
We had 2 in town up till last year. One closed & now a Harbor Frieght is in it’s building. The other is still open & the owner started as a stock boy & bagger in the 70’s. It’s the only place he has ever worked.
Piggly Wiggly, LOL We have at least 4 in our area… I shop there at least once a week .. Racine, Wisconsin…
Body swap – great car with a new tub, move the VIN and gtg
I was thinking the same thing Geoff. Dynacorn make a shell for these. I wasn’t sure whether these are worth spending that sort of money on.
Saw one of these a few years ago locally. Light silver blue in & out and judiciously restored. I think the front bumper on the ’67 & ’68 is one of the coolest ever. The Firebirds have always been more distinctive to me. Lots of work on this one but totally worth it.
Nice car in it’s day, I’m sure. Bidding is already way over what I’d give for it though. Needs a lot of time and or money or both. Gotta decide on buying one that’s already nice or paying through the nose to get this one there, OR be happy working for about $1.25 an hour to get it to the same result. LOL
In the ebay pics 11-14 it appears the car has water line stains underneath and not just the usual barn rot…..
Very good job on the write up!
Sorry, I have nothing else to add that hasn’t already been said.
Thanks for the pointer to Dynacorn — I didn’t know the whole body is now available as a repop! Whoever buys this, consider leaving the trunk spoiler behind as it was only available as a dealer-installed option. From 1984-94 I owned a black 67 Firebird 400 convertible with nearly all available options.
COOL as HECK!!
This is nonsense. The car is worth almost nothing, and unless you are a brain surgeon who had a minor in body work at school forget about it.
MaestroUno is not without reason. Nothing on the car is original from drivetrain to color.. So what exactly is driving the bidding? The vin plate?
to be honest with you after reading all the comments when I went to the ad on eBay I really expected something a lot worse not that this isn’t bad but it is pretty straightforward as far as welding in floor pans that particular car is not that hard to do. most of the main structure looks to be fairly intact. Definitely more than a weekend project. Being a non original engine it would be an opportunity to take a very cool body and do something drastic like install A very very rare Ram Air V a rock Crusher and a 12-bolt. Got a big kick out of seeing the slots in the bumper for the tab of the bumper Jack can’t jack a new one by the bumper. Not so sure it’s worth the kind of money that they appear to be up to at this point but I sure hope somebody gets it and does something real cool with it.
These 1st generation Firebirds are just beautiful cars.
Still a good price. Like 69goat I’m not turned off by the photos. Shame the interior has the ubiquitous 60’s- 70’s holes cut in the side panels for speakers. I believe the seat frames were the same as many GM intermediates and even Corvairs. Buy the interior kit from Year 1 and be done with it.
Aren’t you supposed to turn this into a Camaro? I saw one the other day FS with just the Camaro doghouse, I can’t remember the seller’s creative description of the hybrid.
Hey Chuck F 55 chevy, i was thinking the same thing say maybe 6 hours ago which was before i read your great comment. I made my comment on that blog about the closed fire bird auto shop that’s asking $65,000 for all the cars including a nice looking green, & black 50/50 or as Ford later name it the Ranchero. More pictures on Craigslist about this Pontiac bird house.
