Barnyard Mopar: 1969 Dodge Charger 383

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It never ceases to amaze me what people are willing to pay for rusty Mopar projects. As sweet as they are, restoring a rusted out car is going to get expensive. While this ’69 Charger appears to be a rusty project, at least the seller listed it without a crazy reserve like many of the projects we see. They are offering it for whatever the market values it at, which is currently $2,075. Unfortunately, the seller doesn’t seem to know much about it and only offers three photos of it. If the possibility of picking up cheap (relative to other Mopar projects that is) is too tempting, you can find it here on eBay in Gerlaw, Illinois.

The seller states that this car could be an RT, but that seems unlikely. The engine and transmission are long gone, but the seller is confident that it was a 383 V8 4-speed car. If it were an R/T, it would have a 440 or a 426. It’s been parked in a barnyard (looks like a forest to me) for the past 28 years and is still out, so it may be in worse condition than the photos show. Since the seller lives in Florida and the car is in Illinois, they can’t guarantee that it hasn’t deteriorated more or that any of the shown parts are still present. It seems strange that the owner lives 1,400 miles away from the car and doesn’t know anything about it, so perhaps they are helping someone else sell it or it could be a quick flip.

It will be interesting to watch bidding on this Mopar. Top condition base model ’69 Chargers are still fetching decent money, with 383 4-speed cars going for anywhere between $50k to $70k. If bidding doesn’t go up much, you might actually be able to restore this one for less than buying one that’s already done, plus you’d have the satisfaction of saving a cool car! So, what do you think this one will end up going for?

Thank you. Enough with the junk that couldn’t be restored in a 100 years with 50 people and $1,000,000.00. Come on Barn Finds, stop wasting our time with clickbait

Who’s wasting who’s time? Instead of continuing to read about, then whine about it in the comment section, just skip over the ones you don’t like, and quit wasting our time. This site was not designed for your pleasure, sir…so, if you don’t like it…move on, and please stop the whining. Sound like a bunch of old blue haired ladies around the knitting table bi__hing about the news, when all they have to do is shut off the TV. Sheeesh.

I like seeing these cars regardless of condition. This particular charger looks identical to one we let go about 5 years ago. It was also a 383 car. A buyer, contacted us about some parts we were selling. The buyer drove over 1000 miles to inspect & pick up the parts in person. As we walked through the MOPAR “Graveyard”, this particular 1969 Charger caught his eye. He said he used to have one just like it at 16 years old. After a close inspection, this was THAT car that he had owned 16. It was no better than the condition of this one. Luckily the numbers matching 383 still resided. Needless to say, the car returned with him as well. The guy works for a parts reproduction company…either year one or summit and promised to do a full restoration. I’d like to know where he’s at now.

I don’t mind seeing cars beyond restoration, but four derelict 69-70 Chargers have been featured in less than three weeks, out of seven 68-70 Chargers in total. Enough.

We base what we feature off of what readers send in, so if you don’t like the selection, please feel free to submit tips! You can submit stuff right through the site here: https://barnfinds.com/tips/ and it goes straight to our writers.

I’ve submitted multiple preservation-standard finds — that would not fall into the repetitive Porsche, SS, Rustang, F100, econobox, Camaro category. The link periodically gives an error message. Lots of great BF in my neck of the woods, literally, an area not overly saturated by deep pocketed trollers.

        None ever featured. Stopped submitting.

Sorry we didn’t featured any of your submissions Saul. Honestly, we can only feature so many a day and we do our best to pick the ones we feel our readers will most enjoy.

I have sent in tips. One was for a very nice unrestored 1949 Frazer Manhattan in eastern Washington (still) for sale on Craigslist. I’d rather see cars like that instead of thrashed Mopars that can’t possibly be restored. This car needs to be parted out (if there’s anything worth saving) and the rest crushed.

Those “junk” Mopars are bringing money. I recently sold a 67 GTX for $2500 and a 70 SE 383 for $4000 . Both carcasses were in equivalent condition. Both going to a rotisserie. A buyer from all the way across country bought the Charger. He paid a guy to come evaluate it and ship it. Whats interesting is I was only asking $2500 for the Charger carcass and the buyer said that was not a fair price and gave me the $4k.

Maybe a a few bucks worth of parts on there? I’m not seeing anything close to asking price….

This car is done, if it was all there I’d say it’s still done but at least you’d have something to work with. All your buying here is a vin tag and if it’s a base model then why would you want it. It’s time for the big metal plate to drop on it.

I think it has to have an XS VIN for it to be a real RT in 69.

That’s a rough one. Where would even feel confident hooking up to drag it out? It’s really a shame because when it was brought back there, it probably still had a chance.

Man I am bidding on this as I have hit the jackpot and feel I can drop 200 grand in this with labor and parts and drive it to mecum in zona and get 45 grand 👀😐

Yep it’s a great investment of buying high and selling low 😜😯😜😜😜

Maybe we can rename this site to “barn-finds plus one daily lost causes and negative cash flow project “ for the
    lunatic car fringe of society.

Anyone have a rusted 356 Porsche with a tree growing out of it to post? How about a jacked impala with 4×4 added? 👀😜😅

Okay kidding as I loved the fire truck and the AMC as well as 36 Ford … but Jesus do we have to see these 😯

I am hearing the song “sandman” in my head with lyrics “sleep with one eye open “ after this horror 😯🙃

I think BF should stop featuring such scrap metal. $2K for a VIN tag? I guess if you have a ‘hot’ one you need to cool off, $2k is a decent deal. There are plenty of other finds out there that are worthy of space here

I don’t think there is enough metal left to recycle into an ash tray. Time to let the iron return to the earth from where it once came. The tin worm wins this one.

@Emsea, I think you meant “post-scavenged.” If it is second hand, all the scavenging has been done. Do we even know if the VIN tag is present?

I think BF should continue showing stuff like this. The reason I keep watching is for the oddball stuff and to see how much people are willing to pay for certain things. Quit bit**ing and keep scrolling. BF, keep up the good work!

If there is a featured car I’m not interested in, I don’t click the link. It’s that easy. They put out a lot of content, significantly more than a few months ago, that means there will be a higher number of cars that not everyone will like, it’s just the way thing work.

As an longtime mopar enthusiast, please DO keep posting these (and all the other makes). I love to see just what people think their “prizes” are worth and what people are willing to pay. This one, if a scrapper would even take it, you’d have to pay him.

Before purchasing this Mopar, make sure you are up to date on your shots, and this time of year, make sure you have your winter cloths, because Gerlaw, Illinois is a bit south of Davenport Iowa and the winters there are not nice. I have an Sister-in law that lives in Davenport and the weather is not nice during the winters, especially coming off that cold Mississippi River, that can have some pretty bad ice flows.
By the way who in their right mind would buy this POS, I am like how much would fall off on the trip home. if you know get it on a trailer or hauler. I would tell the owner to call a scrap yard see if they would even come get it for the current scrap price I don’t think they would.

I enjoy seeing junk like this. It is amazing to me what guys are still dragging out of the woods in 2018 regardless of what it is. It’s what I did in my younger days and have pulled out/saved many.

Only now these days I prefer Japanese cars because I don’t have to work on them and can still go fast and in many cases FASTER. I can see the hand writing on the wall.

Keep up the finds BF good job.

That’s not really possible with that kind of lift, but I get the point. More realistic would be a 4 point lift with the shell in the air and the chassis on the ground or a portable lift with the middle of the car in the air and the front clip and trunk broken off on the ground

IF this was a bit more reasonably intact, there is a company that makes reproduction body panels – Dan Woods featured a build using them on a
series of ” Chop, Cut, Rebuild” a while back. That being said, I’d venture that
it would be easier and MUCH cheaper to find a 318 car in considerably better shape and build a clone from that. Without a matching numbers drivetrain, the cost to restore this one would severely exceed what one could expect to sell it for.

Wine, wine, wine. Listen to fureign, GMC, got mechanic coming and FoMoCo, found on road deserted, people wishing their vehicle was worth in perfect condition what a piece of crap, rusty, Mopar is. SHOW every rusty vehicle. Lets start recording prices for them. Start a Rusty Car Value Guide. Wow, Mopar wins again!!!! If a hi value, rusty beyond saving, Mopar offfends you, read something else. Stupid responses to over sold, in your opinion, will not change what is happening. Its the real world. This only raises values on non rusty cars. Shows haw hard it has become finding good cars.

Josh – so some one sent this in – and there is no quality control in place to say – maybe not worth posting ? Guess we would need to include all the junk Porsche’s that are bringing over $100,000 – like one that looks like this Mopar. I’ve read that others have sent in leads but are never posted and I have also sent in many that have not been posted in the years I’ve sent them in. Guess it’s beginning to be like the news we get.
