Basic Beauty: 1975 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

When I think of a mid-seventies Chevrolet Monte Carlo, one of the first things that comes to mind is a well-trimmed exterior, probably with a vinyl top, fancy wheels, and perhaps even a pinstripe down the side.  Is it just me, or is this ’75 model one of the most basic examples you’ve ever seen?  Besides sport mirrors, it’s devoid of just about everything that’s not a necessity, yet there’s still striking beauty here from a minimalist standpoint.  This one’s said to belong to a senior owner, and judging from the photos, it appears to have been well-cared-for.  This 1975 Chevrolet Monte Carlo can be found here on Facebook Marketplace in Chilliwack, British Columbia, with an asking price of $15,000.  Tony Primo, thanks for finding this cool Chevy and sending us the tip!

The second-generation Monte Carlo is one of those cars that excelled when personal luxury cars were king, and I particularly like the front end of the ’75 model, as it got a fresh grille but no quad rectangular headlights just yet.  Most of these have lower trim on the sides, and I never even noticed there was a side-marker light present in the quarter panel until now, as it sort of blends in with those cars having the trim pieces.  It’s possible this one started out with more bling outside, and maybe it got removed for a respray and never reattached.  Whatever’s going on here, the body appears straight, and the white paint seems to be in decent shape.

This one’s fairly plain inside as well, but just about everything we can view seems to be nicely preserved for being at the 50-year mark.  There aren’t any power windows or door locks, no tilt wheel or cruise control, and few optional accessories, period.  However, other than the mats, the condition here makes up for the lack of gadgets, with the seats looking like they have been recovered at some point.  Good news that we can’t see is the floors, which are stated as rock solid front-to-rear.

The base theme continues under the hood, with the standard 350 V8 providing power here.  The seller says the engine is running great, and he also lists the mileage as 60,000, although that’s not positively confirmed as actual.  I can understand the appeal of this 1975 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and the car certainly gives the vibe that it’s been loved over the years.  However, I might consider waiting for another with more accessories and one of the larger engines.  What are your thoughts here?

At least it has an automatic transmission. The standard was a 3 speed on the column.

Automatic became ‘mandatory’ option in ’75.

Stripped not equipped. Personal luxury car it’s not.

The more I look at the Colonnade Cars the more I appreciate them, despite the monumentally ugly box bumpers. The GM intermediates from 1966-67 and 1968-1972 were among the classics of the muscle car era and a hard act to follow, but the next gen would have been so much better with a convertible and without those bumpers.

Did I mention I hated the bumpers?

Personal luxury means different things to different people. I saw plenty like this when they were new. What makes this one interesting is the Special Custom door cards and upholstery pattern that doesn’t match the ’75 offerings. Replace the Cutlass wheel discs with rally or turbine wheels and it becomes a looker.

Beautiful looking car. 1975 has always been my favourite year for the Monte Carlo.

Yeah, the upper door panels and rear sail panels came out of a Landau edition, which also had nicer seats.

Landau came with any of the three interiors. Bench, swivel bucket or special custom 50/50 bench.

I noticed there’s also no a/c, although with the dash its easily added. Maybe didn’t need it in B.C. There’s a rear window blower type defrost.
Rather than RWL tires, put some narrow white sidewalls on. Then it matches with the wheel covers better.
Looks like a really nice ride otherwise.

It is missing all the original exterior trim pieces. Hardly original and looks stripped down.

14″ tires and wheels, no a/c and what appears to be a lot of bondo in the lower extremities. looks good but too much money for what it is. good luck
