Battered but Solid: 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Hardtop

Although it sports its fair share of minor dents and dings, this 1969 Barracuda Hardtop is actually a very solid car, and after being owned by the same person from 1971 until very recently, it is now looking for a new home. Located in Orland, California, it is listed for sale here on eBay. The owner has set a BIN price of $5,900 for the Barracuda, although the option is available to make an offer.

The Barracuda is still wearing its original Limelight paint, with the exception of the passenger side fender, which underwent a repaint at some point. The car was also originally fitted with a vinyl top, but that has been removed. There are plenty of minor dents and dings when you look around the car, and the worst of these are in the rear corners of both quarter panels. Rust is confined to some heavy surface corrosion in the spare wheel well, along with a coating of surface corrosion on the underside of the car. None of this has penetrated the original steel, so it all may be able to be addressed without having to resort to patches or major steel replacement. The physical damage on the car extends to some of the trim and the bumpers, so a few replacement parts will need to be sourced there as well.

The owner describes the interior as being brittle, and that’s a nice little diplomatic word that I’ve never thought to use in the past. It really is a good way to describe it, as it is quite baked. While it is going to require a fair amount of work to bring it back from the brink, it’s a nice bonus to find that the car has been fitted with air conditioning.

Powering the Barracuda is the 230hp 318ci V8 engine, while the car also features a TorqueFlite transmission and power steering. Once again, everything appears to be present under the hood, with no obvious major components missing. The owner doesn’t have the keys to the car, so he hasn’t attempted to get it running. Unfortunately, he also hasn’t tried to wind the engine by hand, which is a bit of a shame, as it leaves us completely in the dark about its condition.

When it was new, this 1969 Barracuda would have been a handsome car, and the lack of rust issues means that it could be once again. There are plenty of dings and dents to attend to, but I think that it would be worth the effort. Could you be the one to take it on?

I had a 64 Baracuda with a 383 and the push button transmission on the dash!! The car ran and I always drove it like I stole it!! It was a fun car at the drive in too!! The rear seat folded down with the big bubble back window!!! I never had the heart to tell my two oldest they were probably conceived in that car!!!! Yeah too much info I know!!!!

I think you meant a 273 V8. A big block 383 would of been a major accomplishment back in the day. Still requires a lot of work today. Maybe you got the year wrong? Probably not with the kids involved.

Yep, biggest motor MOTHER MOPAR offered in the 1964 barracuda was the 273 cu.( 225 super charger slant six or 273 V8), the baby brother to the killer 340 Magnum

This would be easy to clean up and apply a paint job for a nice street cruiser but the economical small block won’t give much power. As mentioned a 383ci. in a ‘64 would be a major chop under the hood and not very street friendly.

Air conditioning is a big plus. I’d source a vintage air unit immediately after getting this thing running. “Easy to clean up and apply a paint job” but only for that rarest of rare body man who is a perfectionist. Every panel here needs a good massage, reference coat of primer, block send, another reference coat, etc etc. There are creases everywhere. Then, after you perfect the body and prep it for paint, you have to start thinking about an entire interior. Not a cheap restoration even to driver standard. I was into this car like I was the same one back in the 1970s sitting forlornly at the back of a car lot. Oh, and those wheel covers are from a different Plymouth intermediate.

    Nice little project.

Don’t let the 318 bother you. Its plenty fast. 230 HP.

Price a bit high considering non runner and a screwed interior

It looks like Oscar the Grouch in his garbage can. I kinda like the beaten appearance, but not at that price.
