We just featured a Mercedes “fintail” a few days ago, but this 1966 diesel model may have a better story to tell as it was just pulled out from behind those huge barn doors. Located somewhere on the archipelago of Malta, this 200-series Mercedes-Benz supposedly belonged to the former Prime Minister of Malta, Borg Olivier. Delivery to the U.K. will be cheap; to the U.S., likely not. Find this 1966 Mercedes 200 here on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of about $5,000 U.S.
The seller says it has been stored for about a decade, and that coating of dust would support that claim. Check out the old-school grill badges – I wonder what motoring club they represented? Glass appears intact, along with headlights, trim rings and turn signals; the iconic Mercedes grill hasn’t been knackered up and the shut lines look tight. This surrounding building in which this car was stored looks quite sturdy, and it’s not surprising to me that it hasn’t been disturbed. I wonder who fired up the wipers for a quick swipe of the windshield?
I’ve always liked the fintails, and I really like them on plain-jane steel wheels without the color-matched hubcaps attached. This example sports a manual transmission paired to the OM621 diesel four-cylinder. 1958 represented the introduction of the second generation of the W110 chassis, with modest changes noted from one year to the next. The diesel motor was largely the same with the exception of using a five main bearing crankshaft versus three in the prior year’s model. The body looks quite sound out back, although the original bumpers are missing front and rear.
The seller doesn’t elaborate on running condition, but sounds quite confident that it is a preserved example that was stored properly. Obviously, those of us in the states will have a hard time justifying the cost of importing a car like this but our overseas readers should be assured that the seller can provide affordable transport to the U.K. The ownership connection to a foreign dignitary may not mean much to us here, but I’m sure a resident of Malta would get a kick out of driving the former Prime Minister’s car!
Heck with the car, I’ll take the barn!
$5000? The seller should do stand-up!
Zero to Sixty in three days!
Reminds me of the Godfather, when Michael was hiding in Sicily.
Can it be pushed back into the barn? Lock it up for fifty years. Then it might worth $5k. For now it looks like a taxi that just drove through a sand storm
Honestly…..nice pics, terrible car. How is Malta an archipelago, btw? Known as the George Cross Island, has it been shedding pieces since WW2?
It’s an archipelago of 3 islands. The biggest one is Malta, then Gozo and the smallest is Comino. All together are called the Maltese archipelago.
The change in W110 was 1965 not 1958.
Nice looking Mercedes-Benz Heckflosse 200D Diesel.
