BF Auction: 1950 Bentley Mark VI Rolling Chassis

Reader George G is a long-time Barn Finder who always works on something interesting! While he has a wide range of interests, his primary focus is on British Luxury cars. He recently decided to make some room, and he isn’t going to get around to doing anything with this 1950 Bentley Mark VI chassis, so he’s decided to list it as a Barn Finds Auction!

This Mark IV’s body was in sad shape with serious rust issues, but since it had a clean title and a solid frame, he decided to save the chassis. There’s a little surface rust, but nothing that can’t be cleaned up easily. The engine is long gone, but it’s a roller and still retains all four wheels, wheel covers, brakes, steering, pedals, and the coveted Mark VI fuel tank! It could be used to build a custom-bodied hot rod, could be parted out, or could be used to save another Mark VI with a damaged chassis.

According to George, the parts are worth considerably more than his reserve, but he doesn’t have the space or time to part it out. Here’s his thoughts on the value of the individual parts, “the brake drums are $250 each, the differential at least $500, each axle shaft with bearings and housing $250 -each, the fuel tank up to $500 and the good steering box has got to be a couple of hundred, plus you would still have the frame and title”. Since George knows these cars and their market well, we will take his word for it.

The Mark VI was a significant car for Bentley. It was their first fully factory-finished car. Typically, they delivered their chassis to a coachbuilder to be bodied and completed, but given the market in 1946, they also decided to build their own complete cars. Unfortunately, Post-War steel supplies were quite limited, so these steel-bodied cars had rust issues early on. It’s not surprising the body was in rough shape, but it’s amazing how solid the chassis is. It’s lived in Arizona, and that seems to have helped. So, what would you do with this rolling chassis? Would you part it out, build a Bentley Special body, or find a good Mark IV body to put on it?

      Amazing!! At one time this vehicle was brand new!! Now the frame could be used as a rat rod although you could always buy it and say to everyone that you own a Bentley! It certainly has value to a Bentley aficionado!

      It’s possible Mallalieu still has some Oxford style FG body shells. The finished car looks a really elegant tourer. The original radiator shell would be required. Suggestion use a Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel with an auto box for smooth economical running. Whatever you do it’s a worthwhile project. Yes it’s tempting to go all the way handing the chassis to a specialist coach builder but not cost effective.

      The variety of Bentley Mark VI specials is … a lot of vehicles wanting to be an SS100 Jaguar? From this slant and given the missing engine and transmission, the equivalent to putting an LS or other GM product into a different brand of hot rod might be like on this rolling chassis using a Jaguar twincam 6 of whatever displacement and a modern 5 speed gearbox in a sleek 2 seater.
