This 1964 Volkswagen Beetle is the kind of classic we love to find! It’s ready to drive and is being offered by its second owner. While Beetles aren’t the fastest car ever built, they are wonderfully unique and can be surprisingly fun to drive. This one has been equipped with the more powerful 1.6-liter engine, which should up the fun factor and make it a more usable driver. If you’d love to be its third owner, it’s being offered here as a Barn Finds Auction, and is located in Torrance, California.

Few cars are as iconic as the Beetle. With their affordable price, quirky design, and dependability, they were a popular choice for millions of drivers worldwide. They’ve been the basis for countless kit cars and custom builds. Unfortunately, it’s getting harder and harder to find uncut examples. While the seller admits there is rust on the doors, engine cover, and a few other exterior areas, they state the floor pan is solid throughout and have provided numerous underside photos for our review. While it would be a shame to cut it up for a kit-car or dune-buggy build, it’s an option that might make sense for anyone who wants to build a wild custom car on a Beetle pan that didn’t get to back in the ’70s.

The interior is said to be original but shows some wear and age. It looks correct and is in the condition you would expect for a 60+ year old Beetle. It isn’t perfect, but it’s usable and complete. The seller has provided photos of the floors beneath the vinyl mat, and they appear to be in good shape. The headliner is super clean and looks great. The interior features a dealer-installed AM radio, glovebox, manual wind windows, and a heater, which is about as luxurious as it gets in a Beetle. The seller notes that the electrical system was switched to 12-volt during their ownership, so you will want to avoid turning the 6-volt radio on.

The 1200 was Volkswagen’s workhorse engine for a number of years, and while it’s a good little engine, the 1600 offered a healthy boost in performance while still being dependable. For ’64, the 1200 was rated at 40 horsepower, while the later 1600 was good for 57 horsepower. That might not sound like much, but that extra 17 horsepower makes a big difference on the road. The seller states that the engine runs strongly and smoothly.

Beetles are surprisingly fun cars to drive. They are lightweight, simple, and easy to work on. The seller believes this car to be fairly original. This could make a good restoration candidate or be preserved and enjoyed as is. So, what direction will you take this Bug? Wow I would love to be able to buy it, I think the 1800 miles to home would be interesting without a radio and would take longer than the 18 hours Google maps says it is but it would make for a fun trip

What a nice find. My mom had the exact same Beetle, and the author is right, it is fun to drive and will do 70 all day on the Freeway. I actually had a few dates in high school in the bettle and the ladies loved it. Good luck, I wish I could bid.

This little beetle is now in its seventh decade and looks likely to be running around when it’s a hubdred years old.

It will probably be wheezing and grunting up and down hills long after the current complicated electronics-laden cars have stopped ticking.

Four K, and reserve not met, puts it out of my interest range. I see way too much rust for a black plate Cal car. I wonder if it been a beach car. I’m wishing both the buyer and seller well.
