The turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 features sequential fuel injection and sends power to the rear wheels through a TH-200-4R automatic transmission. Minor modifications include a K&N air filter and a Kenne Bell cold-air intake. During the seller’s ownership, the air-conditioning system was serviced, with the car receiving a new compressor, accumulator, and condenser. The seller states that everything works as it should except the power antenna and trunk-release button.

Nice looking GN with great options and rare Astro roof but feel it’s being mispresented with only minor mods mentioned. Big meaty rear tires with boxed rear control arms, big exhaust, no cat, cold air kit, intake upgrade, A-Pillar boost gauge, etc. If I didn’t know better this car has been heavily raced. 28K all 1/4 mile? Would like to know if engine or tranny rebuilt and any point before I make any bid.
Bill, I’m pretty certain it has never been raced. If you know GNs, you know they develop major stress cracks along the B pillar. I included photos of both areas on either side showing zero stress cracks.
Bill, following up on your question. There is no evidence that this GN has ever been anything other than a street driven (sparingly) car. I’m not aware of the drivetrain having ever been removed or worked on. Every indication appears to point to someone wanting a rather quicker GN than the other guy next to him/her so he performed some tasteful mods. The original air intake system is intact and in a box that came with the car.
Assume your not the original owner and don’t know who was, will take your word that you have not raced, but custom rear controls arms are not tasteful mods. They serve one purpose and no one will replace them as tasteful. If anything on a street car weld in some steel pieces to stock arms. Had 2 GN’s and 3 Type’s in my time and always on the lookout for good quality buys. I did this mod to my street raced cars and added Polyurethane bushings. Stress cracks developed over time and some had some did not. No need to go on and on if it was. GL with your sale.
Good looking GN with some very common mods. The one thing that surprised me when I bought my ’87 a few months ago was that the power antenna still functioned. Honestly I cannot recall another Turbo Buick that I have seen in recent memory where the PA still operates when you power on the radio. Definitely a common malady with these but not too difficult to rectify. I’ve had a blast driving mine around and receiving all of the compliments that the car gets from people, both male and female, young and old. The next caretaker of this Buick will definitely enjoy many smiles per mile. Good luck with the auction, Bob.
These big automatic coupes are fast from the factory. Great long distance touring cars. Roomy, comfortable, well appointed, quiet and plenty of passing power on the highway. ↩️🏁
How long does a stock TH-200-4R last?
I couldn’t tell you but I do know that the general robusted the 200-4R to handle the torque that the 3.8t created. I’ve owned a number of GNs and a WE4 with no problems with it.
my 87 El Camino with a 350 hp 350 has the 200-4r with 200k so far. i had it built to take 500 hp. I use the camino to pull a 16′ flatbed with a couple of zero turn mowers and other things on it. The orig 200-4r lasted 200k miles behind the stock 305. This trans is pretty tough if you treat it right. I change fluid and filter every 50k miles.
Having worked in a Buick dealership for many years I can say the transmission did a fine job and were tough. I had two turbo Regals and never had a hint of a problem. One of them turned in the 11s.

My comment is in regards to the write-up on this car. As ex-GN man as well as a Buick dealer employee and one was was called the GN man I can say that most people did not want the digital dash nor the hole in the roof.
This would be a fine ride and I’d like to own it but I am too old to drive it. It takes fast reactions to drive one or you will find your self in the trunk of the car ahead.
Man this is a nice GN and I would love to park it next to the GN I currently own. These were my dream cars in my younger days I still think these cars are very desirable looking. I get compliments every now and then from people even from a Cobra Mustang owner as I was driving to work one morning.
I absolutely love mine but life happens. It gets compliments and thumbs-ups everywhere I go. Car shows are the most interesting. Everyone has a Grand National story and it usually ends with, “I got smoked!”

You have stated that the deck lid and hood have been repainted. It appears in the pictures that both have a bit of a brownish black hue with some streaking in the paint. The core support and one of the fenders also appear to be repainted based on some overspray on the stickers and minor fish eye on the core support and some markings in the paint below one of the fender GN enblems. Can you provide some clairification? I have tried to attached reference pictures I downloaded but this system wont allow it for some reason. The pictures are 26,27,34, 40, 45 and 113. Thank you
Tinpusher, the only information I can honestly provide is from my purchase on. The CarFax that was provided with the GN states it has never been in an accident. Since my acquisition, the hood was spot painted and the decklid painted due to the shop burning through the original paint.
