Remember the glory years when we didn’t all need a huge SUV? If we had a family or needed to haul something, we had a station wagon. If we needed to use it off paved roads, we had one with a bit more clearance and all four wheels providing traction. Think of the AMC Eagle wagon, the Subaru Outback, etc. If you wanted something a bit fancier, you had an Audi Allroad, such as this 2005 model.
Sadly, that classification of vehicle, which was once known as a “raised wagon,” became known as a Crossover. They have evolved into being almost as big as SUVs, so what’s the point? Make mine an AWD wagon every single time. Audi’s Allroad was based on the C5 Audi A6 and was similar to the AWD Avant, but it came with air suspension and other features for easier off-road travel.
Audi offered the C5 Allroad, which only came in a station wagon, for the 1999 model year until the end of the 2005 model year. Audi’s “raised-wagon” model is alive in the middle of the SUV hell we live in today. You can see that this example has rust issues, but the seller has included underside photos, and it looks rock solid underneath. They say it had yearly “oil undercoat treatments,” and it has passed the Vermont inspection and is good until May of 2025. With 165,772 miles this Allroad has been used, and the AC isn’t working, but it has new tires and a set of winter tires, the front suspension airbags have been replaced, and heavy-duty rear bags were replaced last year.
We don’t get to see the dash, but what we see of the rest of the interior looks good. I’m assuming that the rear seats and front seats are heated, but we don’t have detailed photos of those areas. The rear cargo area doesn’t have as much space as a new Audi A8 SUV, but who really needs that much volume anyway? The seller mentions that a secondary airflow sensor light is on.
The engine and car, in general, would have benefitted from a good cleaning, but under that dust is an Audi (Volkswagon Group) 2.7-liter DOHC turbocharged V6 with 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Audi’s legendary Quattro system sends that power through a ZF five-speed tiptronic automatic to all four wheels as needed. The seller has this 2005 Audi Allroad listed here as a Barn Finds Classified in Waitsfield, Vermont, and they’re asking $3,500 or best offer. Do any of you own an AWD Audi wagon such as this Allroad?
Remember the glory years when we didn’t all need a huge SUV? Pepperidge Farm remembers
Ha!
soooo funny. very laughable
I remember when interiors & exteriors were not grey & when many cars had hidden wipers.
The seller would be wise to include some maintenance records. Audi’s 2.7 Biturbo doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability or serviceability.
What Audi does?

Mine has been very reliable, I won’t give it up for anything. Goes like no other car or truck in snow with air suspension raised to high position for the deep stuff. Makes my Silverado 4×4 look pathetic when snowing. Only concerning thing it does is deposit about a tablespoon of oil in left intercooler at every oil change. Assume it is a turbo seal but has not changed in last 40000 miles. Sadly, this one does not look cared for. Very nice ones usually bring real money from niche followers.
I have two other Allroads. Mill Brook Imports does a great job keeping them dialed in!
I think any front wheel drive car would make any 4×4 pickup look bad in the snow unless you put a bunch of weight in the bed.
these are hot junk… look at how rotted out this is. go get yourself an olds custom cruiser and save you money and headaches
FYI, two minor issues to note;
1) Occasionally in winter radiator fluid reservoir drops an inch or so from expansion and contraction. Happened three times last year.
2) After resetting, check engine light eventually comes on. The code indicates caused by secondary air flow sensor. Have not replaced. Does not affect driving performance.

If the reservoir drops an inch or so it may just need its strap tightened.
I coveted Allroad ownership until I learned the timing belt change required removal of everything between the headlights until the engine was exposed, and cost an average of $1200. And that was 15 years ago. Nope.
I know people love them, but more than one owner told me,”Get a 3 series wagon instead.” I did, twice now.
That’s known as the “Audi service position” (no joke, look it up). The cars are designed for pretty much any major service beyond routine oil/filter changes to be performed that way, so you only need to undo a handful of clips and bolts to open it up, which takes about 15 minutes and the same to button it back up again.
I used to think these were cool but Volvo’s wagon is probably more reliable. I’d rather have the Buick Regal Tour X.
I just saw a Regal Tour X the other day and was blown away – I had totally forgotten about them due to the fact that you never, ever see them on the road.
This one was lowered with fat tires and looked very mean,
There’s nothing as expensive as a cheap German car.
I remember reading many years ago “friends don’t let friends buy Audi Allroads” ….
I have a 2002 TT ALMS and have had zero trouble with it for over two decades. Well, the right front marker light went out about a year ago but otherwise, nothing.
