This cool 1960 Chrysler Windsor was inherited by reader Charles S. in January of 2015. In his words: By mid April 2015 I had the car running, and by the end of May it was driving. The all original 383 purrs like a kitten with no extra rattles, and is quieter then my truck in the background. The Torqflite push button transmission shifts smoothly and seems as bomb-proof as the day it was built. Charles is looking for $6,500 for this car, which seems quite reasonable considering it’s a true find with 40,582 miles! The car in general looks exactly what it is; a find that’s been stored a long time but is in pretty darned good shape. I’ll let Charles continue: The paint is not so nice that you have to worry about it melting or getting scratched in a parking lot. It is original from 1960, but you can see from her first hand wash in 30 years, it cleans up a lot. Now for some bad, and it’s not game changing either. The trunk lid has the fake spare built into it and although it looks great, the drainage from that part is bad, it no longer leads to the lip on the trunk. At some point those rusted away about 1/2 to 3/4 around the trunk which lets water into the trunk. (Can see duct tape in one of photos, sorry about the glue). The trunk still has the original spare tire and wheel and crappy old jack that the car came with. And an equal sized spare to the tires that are on it, 14″ with hub caps that are nice. But everything in trunk has surface rust. Nothing major, very solid metal everywhere except for where the trunk weather strip sits, those are gone 1/2 way to 3/4 way around. The latch works fine and is solid.
I have driven this car to 3 local car shows and got to give my mom a ride in it again. We drove like 100 miles in late 2015 and mid 2016, and had zero problems. The car people love this old girl, her fins are straight and the boomerang taillights are not sun faded or cloudy. The bumpers are in good shape with no big dents or scrapes, and they do, and will clean up nicely as does all the chrome trim which is all there. I have the original brake master cylinder and the original wheel cylinders to which I replaced with factory style parts. You can rebuild the old if you’d like. I replaced the old valve cover gaskets when I had the covers off, when I had first gotten her running. That is all I had to replace to get her to the shows, not including 4 new tires. I did end up replacing the muffler and tailpipe. I have to sell this car because I bought a house and need the money for repairs. I don’t have the greatest means of storage but this 19 and a half foot land yacht is currently up on blocks and well covered, but I know someone can do better.
The interior is all original as well, but is in desperate need of a good professional cleaning. There are some stains near the rear window headliner. The carpet cleaned up nicely. The seats have no tears, and are in good shape, they also need a good cleaning. The horn works and is super loud, but not with original relay. AM radio works and 3 out of 4 gauges work, including important ones like the speedometer.
The 383 V8 introduced in the Windsor from 1959 on was advertised as the “Golden Lion”, and was advertised as making 305 horsepower. As Charles had told us, it seems to run very well.

Does it have the Astrodome instrument cluster? That alone will sell it. I think that was ’61-’63 tho.
Yep?
According to hemmroids it should.

LOL! Great action photo Dave! Both thumbs up!
@leiniedude
That car must only be in second gear, a long way to go to 200. ;-)
Yes it does guys just like in that pic
Love the bi-level front seat. That’s a car with character.
This car is close enough and cool enough to make me call in sick and take a drive up. Almost.
With that sharp looking interior it looks like a great way to enjoy a vintage Chrysler that’s neither completely roached nor a zillion dollars.
I get over-committed and have 3 cars I’ll never sell. Shame on me. Kudos to the guy in town who rotates through cars like this Chrysler every 2 or 3 years. He finds them, enjoys them and bids them a fond farewell – like a stream of Caribbean cruises. Or divorcee girlfriends. Always delightful, never a burden.
Covered on blocks? I hope someone gets this into their oversized garage ASAP and pampers it.
That’s what I saying.
Thanks guys👍
Nice car same vintage as me. One project car is enough though.
Back in High School I cleaned and detailed cars for extra cash. I had a customer who had one of these with that dash. Hard to keep your eyes on the road.
Happy birthday Buddy! I’ll have one for you, many more and have a great day, Mike.
I didn’t really like Mopars when these were new, but now I appreciate the wonderfully coherent design elements of this car, from the boldly shaped grille to the giant frisbee on the trunk. The angle of the A pillars flows so gracefully with the fins. The car is begging, “Cruise me!”
This car brings to mind the distinction among Fad, Fashion, & Style – Fads are short-lived, popular for a time but not having any really enduring value; Fashion can last a little longer and usually gets embraced by those with a modicum of good taste. True Style endures and only seems to get better with age. This car makes a statement and that statement is, “Yes, I’m cool.”
Great find.
Just think Virgil Exner! Whatta designer!
Cruise me is right. This car has that kind of effect on you when you drive her. Great door arm style.
Another 60’s great American land yacht. I love it! Especially the off to side fins. One of the few times you will hear me say “4 doors, okay”. Me want!
My parents bought a 1960 Chrysler sedan in about 1962 (I was 13) and they had it long enough that it was the car I took my first driver license test in, and passed the first time, with the pushbutton transmission. It was a pale green, don’t remember if it was a Windsor or not and don’t know what engine it had. Not sure if it had that cool dome speedometer.
I was a car geek from early on but mostly for the colors etc. This picture was probably taken the day they got it. Me on the right, dad in the middle and my little brother on the left.
Looks like the nose of my car I think it might be a Windsor. Mine has that step in the bumper too. Great pic
how did he get it to 75mph i guess it was on blocks and he says the interior needs a cleaning, i think after all those years if you tried to clean it the fabric would fall apart from dry rot. but perhaps not. lovely car too bad about the trunk, he never said if it was the trunk lip or the car itself that rusted away letting water in. if its the trunk it can be replaced if the car no way
I don’t think the Speedo picture is of the car for sale but a picture showing how they were. Nice car even with 4 doors ! I’d like it to road trip in.
Yes that’s not of car for sale I didn’t do that. The trunk lip is rotted letting the water in from around the trunk not from bottom up. I have more pics. Any questions just ask me I am new at this is my first with barnfinds.
She’s a beauty, and good luck to the seller! It should sell easily.
This is truly a car that I like. Although the 2 doors are sportier, I think the end of the Forward Look era 4 door Chrysler look just as good to me.
Subscribing to Barn Finds is especially frustrating to me because of the cars I want to buy. I guess I will have to adopt the practice that JRHaelig speaks of. But not the divorcee girl friends though.
The Astrodome is the coolest dashboard very in the history of cool. One note-the 383 in this car is likely not the same 383 big block that appeared in millions of Mopars in the 60’s -70s. It’s based on the “raised block” design and is more akin to the Mopar 440 and 413. Pistons would be very hard to find for this, but most else would interchange. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_B_engine
My guess is that the “200 mph” speedometer is really one that is in kilometers, on an export model.
The 1960 models are some of the most beautiful Chryslers ever made!
Yes, you are correct. It is a kph speedometer. Standard domestic cars had 120 mph speedometers, and letter cars 150 mph. And the astrodome was used from 60-62.
I believe this is correct
Steve….yer partially correct….383 RB motor…..look them up. And I need one for my Fury girl…….!
The Astrodome cluster shown is on a Canadian Car in Kilometers
