The same color as my dad’s leisure suit from the 1970s, this “Orange” is more of a burnt orange than an orange-orange, but it’s orange nonetheless, and it’s a great color. It’s really the only unusual color that Saturn, an unusual car company, offered in the coupe version of its popular cars. This 2002 Saturn SC2, located in Glendale, California, is being offered with an asking price of $5,800 and is listed as a BF Exclusive!

Any car color is a great color these days in a sea of black, silver, and white vehicles. And speaking of unusual, how about that crazy driver’s side door configuration! The three-door SC2 coupe filled a need for those folks who holler, “TWO TOO MANY DOORS!!!!!!” Well, now they had one less door, and life was good again. I’ve always wondered why the extra door for the rear passengers wasn’t on the passenger side for a country that drives on the right side of the road.

As with a lot of Southern California cars, this paint is a bit faded, and it looks like maybe a panel or two has been repainted at some point, unless it’s a trick of light and shadow. The biggest exterior bummers are a gaping hole in the top of the left front fender, and the front spoiler needs to be repainted and maybe fixed a bit, but not in that order. The work needed to bring the exterior back to looking like new again, if that’s on anyone’s list, is a little daunting, money-wise. This one is wearing optional alloy wheels. Here’s a 2002 Saturn SC2 brochure.

The ubiquitous dash pad is in place, as is a steering wheel cover. We don’t know what’s under either of those, but I hope it’s good news. The optional leather (available only on the SC2, not the SC1) seats in black (the other color was tan) look good both front and rear, and the trunk (this isn’t a hatchback) is bigger than a lot of us would have guessed. Other than the orange color and the unusual three-door layout, the fun part of this car is the five-speed manual transmission.

The engine could have used an hour of quick detailing to make it look much better. The SC2 received Saturn’s 1.9-liter DOHC inline-four with 124 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by the Saturn MP3 five-speed manual sending power to the front wheels, the seller says it has new tires, a new battery, and other than a few cosmetic things to tinker with, it’s ready to drive anywhere. Have any of you owned a Saturn SC2?
