Dodge’s compact Lancer lasted only two model years, making any surviving example an uncommon sight today. This 1962 Lancer 770 is said to be essentially a one-owner car that was discovered in the original owner’s garage after his passing. A friend performed minor work to revive it, and it is now offered in Butte, Montana as a Barn Find Exclusive, with a clean title, 39,713 indicated miles, and a $12,000 asking price.
Although closely related to the Plymouth Valiant, the Lancer received plenty of personality of its own. This upscale 770 wears generous brightwork, round taillights, modest fins, and some wonderfully unconventional sheet metal. Its four-door body and roomy bench seats also make it more practical than many collector cars from the same period.
Photos show Chrysler’s 225-cubic-inch Slant Six beneath the hood, paired with a pushbutton automatic transmission. It will not deliver muscle-car acceleration, but these engines earned a reputation for durability and straightforward maintenance. The seller says the car starts and runs great following its revival, although prospective buyers should confirm the condition of the brakes, cooling system, and other components before planning a long trip.
The white exterior was repainted because the original finish had faded. It presents well in the photographs, with the trim, badging, chrome, and factory-style wheel covers still present. This is not a flawless car though, as one bumper has a noticeable dent and close-ups reveal some corrosion around a wheel opening and underneath, but overall it presents very well. The red-and-white interior may be the car’s strongest feature, with attractive upholstery, matching door panels, a clean dashboard, and a tidy headliner.
This Lancer combines rarity and unusual styling with simple mechanicals and genuine everyday usability.
