Big Block 1967 Chevrolet Caprice in Royal Plum

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

With a regal shine on mostly original Royal Plum paint, this 1967 Chevrolet Caprice in Saint Joseph, Missouri seeks a new caretaker. The well-appointed Chevy comes with a paltry 58,000 miles on the odometer and documentation dating to the original purchase. Thanks to reader T.J. for spotting this classy Caprice.

This “pattern cloth and vinyl” combination in plum perfectly compliments the Royal Plum paint. Thanks to OldCarBrochures for some details. The seller describes this interior as “one year only,” and while Chevrolet occupied the entry-level spot in the General Motors lineup, this fine interior could be mistaken for any of the higher brands. The tilt steering wheel, air conditioning, power windows, power steering, and power brakes make life easier for the driver.

The black vinyl top, formal roof line, and plentiful trim invite a drive to church or a fine restaurant. A generous trunk accommodates long trips. How many modern vehicles offer seating for six without clambering into a third row? Chevy called this line-topping Caprice “The Grand Chevrolet” and it punched above its weight in the market.

The blinding orange big block and “detailed” engine compartment look barely altered from original, and the claimed original 325 HP 396 cid (6.5L) big block perfectly suits the understated confidence of this Caprice. Bountiful torque answers the bidding of your right foot. Hindsight is 20/20 but it might have been better to clean the 396 rather than repainting it. Gorgeous as it is, the brilliant orange glares against mostly original patina.

With the fastback, these cars look tail-heavy, but this slanted and more formal roof line offers visual balance. Check out more pictures and a well-crafted description here on Craigslist where $22,500 makes this purple peach yours. Rusty Mopar shells selling in the high teens make this needs-nothing air-conditioned big block cruiser mighty tempting. Would you make room in your driveway for this Royal Plum big block Caprice?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this exact color combo before. I would imagine it is somewhat rare. I disagree with the author, a dingy engine block with burnt off and peeling paint can look unkempt. It may not match the condition of every other piece in the engine compartment but restoring both the master cylinder and booster will elevate the appearance that much more. The seller says “mostly original paint.” Curious as to how much is original. Overspray is visible on the top of the firewall near the cowl. Overall, from the pics, looks like a nice big block cruiser in a color you won’t see often.

The trunk lid is a bit faded, but if the car was mine I’d treat it to a complete repaint, same color naturally.

What a nicely optioned, beautiful car!

If everything the owner/seller says is true, I’d buy this in a heartbeat if I had to choose between this and a Mopar in the same shape, for the same money. Didn’t like Mopars then (except for a couple) don’t like them now.

A purple that’s “not too purple”, looks great on this car! And a big block to boot. I like ’67 and ’68 full-size Chevies. If what the owner/seller says is true, I think it’s a bargain.

Not a big fan of these big Chevys, but this car/this color are a winning combination in this man’s book. I am glad it’s not a manual or I would be sorely tempted with this one! Spectacular presentation! Spectacular find!

That’s a well written Craigslist ad.

I’d have to look and see if NURPLE is still available as a vanity plate in my state.

That’s not a terrible outlay of cash for what you get. Lots in the “plus” column to like. Wish I had a garage to let her rest in until the weekends come around.

Makes me think of the 67 Caprice I bought used when I got back from Germany in 74. Mine was the 2 door like this but had 283 with 3 speed and OVERDRIVE with bucket seats and console. Really strange equipment for a Caprice

Close to 50 years ago I found a 67 Caprice coupe in these colors in South Dakota. It was an original 396 car that had had a 348 with 3 deuces swapped in. I didn’t want the 348 so bought it with no engine, but with the 400 THM trans and 12 bolt posi. I had just parted out a very rough 67 Chevelle SS 396, saving the SS hood, factory instrument dash and “blinker tach” – and the 375 HP 396. I was in high school and didn’t know better so I put the 375 HP in the Caprice, with it’s 2.73 geared rear end. Not much off the line but you could go as fast as you dared – way too fast for the crappy tires that were on it. I drove it for my first 2 years of college but sold eventually sold it for tuition money. The Royal Plum was a very nice color when polished up

Best deal on Craigslist. You will never find another one in this color combo. And most Caprices were sedans. This is a bargain. If my garage wasn’t full of Lincoln Town Cars I’d be on my way with a trailer and cash.

That “Astro-Bench” seat is pretty rare, too.

When I was in high school, many many moons ago, I used to walk home from school and on the route was a finance company. Sitting outside was a nice Caprice like this I wanted bad, I might have dug up the $$ however my parents didn’t think it was the right car for me, ever since I have wanted one

I think back then (and now) this car appealed to young and old, single or with family. Big, sporty, handsome and a very unique color.

Bought this almost exact car in 1970 when I returned from a 3 year tour of duty in Germany. Mine was a 327, 300hp. Loved that car! I never saw another like it except at a Mecum auction last year.
