It is a rare opportunity to own a car from the personal collection of an icon like Carroll Shelby. This 1968 Ford Mustang was built by Legendary G.T. Continuation Cars as an homage to the Shelby “Green Hornet” and was owned by Carroll Shelby himself (prior to and after the conversion). It was last sold at Mecum Auctions in 2020 where it hammered for nearly $400,000! It is once again being offered at auction later this month by Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. Details can be found here on Barrett-Jackson.com. It will be interesting to see if the selling price is significantly higher or lower after three years. Let’s take a closer look at this iconic car and thanks to Larry B. for the tip that it is up for sale again.
The engine is a 428/335 HP Cobra Jet V-8 engine. It is topped by a Shelby intake manifold, water pump, and Holley 700 CFM carburetor. Gears are shifted through a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to a Currie 9-inch rear end with 3.25 gears.
The interior features bucket seats with a center console. The Deluxe interior features no roll bar, which I guess is a good or bad thing depending on how hard you plan on driving the car. The dash is autographed by Carroll Shelby himself!
The exterior features Lucas fog lamps, and Shelby 10-spoke wheels inside of Goodyear GTII tires. According to Barrett-Jackson “The car is in mint condition and only had 213 miles on it when Shelby signed the title over to his foundation on December 29, 2008. Today it has only 564 miles on the odometer and comes with the original California license plate and Carroll Shelby’s signature on the “Transfer of Ownership.” A Certificate of Authenticity signed by Shelby is also included with the car’s history.”
Another “Barn Find” that will probably never get driven
on the street. At least I hope the new owner will take it to
car shows.
Imagine what it would cost to insure it.
Carroll Shelby even signed his OWN car!
I would think that Jackson would buy it. Does he have the other 2 coupes?
Craigs are not copies.
They are the REAL THING!
For 400,000.00 I think you’ll be able to build 10 of them, you’ll just have to sign your own glove box door
Let this serve as a esson for that guy who striped and scooped the heck out of his black Mustang coupe as it was featured over the weekend:
Even Carroll Shelby himself didn’t throw big hood stripes over the top of his hardtop …
lesson … oh well …
But since I’m here again, it’s worth noting that Shelby stuffed his coupe with real horsepower too. If you’re going to pretend that your Mustang was done by Shelby, start by giving it all the power first.
“Honest, Mr Insurance Company! It only puts out *cough* 335hp”
I think the rarest of all is one not signed by Carroll Shelby…
Not mentioned here in the write up, this is selling with no reserve!!
The car may be a real collector’s item but those taillights are ugly to say the least! The taillights that were on the factory cars were much better looking!
I’m not a car collector but I don’t understand why people spend this much money on automobiles and gets leave them set in the garage instead of driving them! Cards are meant to be driven, not looked at!
This engine in a notchback Mustang is like putting a Hemi in a Gremlin. Unless you load a half ton of bricks over the rear axle, all you’ve built is a good looking machine that burns tires as its primary function. There as a reason Ford did not run with the Lil Red prototype/mockup as a production car.
I love it. I love the Shelby history. But were I to build a car like this, it would be around a small block, with emphasis on brakes and handling. The Shelby body parts mkke it look plenty potent, even when just sitting at the curb. A lot of power can be coaxed out of a 289, and the weight loss will dramatically improve performance in the curves. Just my .02
Gosh Id like to just drive it just to see if I could keep the rear end on the ground :)
Damn shame not to take it to In n Out occasionally
Not crazy about dad’s big Ford car lux steering wheel on ’68 stangs, let alone on this car.
