Blown Propane 428! 1968 Ford F100

When the driver of this former magazine feature truck says they’re going to “hit the gas,” they mean it! As if a supercharged 428 isn’t interesting enough in a 1968 Ford F100, this one runs on propane, good old barbecue fuel. We featured this pickup previously in April of 2021 when it fetched more than $10,000 on eBay. Since then it’s migrated from Baldwin, Wisconsin to its current location in Bloomer, Wisconsin, about an hour away. Now it comes to market here on HiBid where bidding has eclipsed $5000 with over two weeks to go. Thanks to reader duane for spotting this subtle-looking custom with the interesting propulsion system.

While fleet vehicles have run propane for decades, it’s unusual to see one in a performance-minded build. Despite the passage of time, this engine compartment looks clean and tidy. Propane-powered vehicles are known for keeping the engine clean inside and out, and also for lasting 300,000 miles (and sometimes much more) in regular operation.

Besides rolling gear, the Ford looks nearly identical to when it graced the pages of Truckin’ magazine in April 1985. Propane may have been interesting then, but in those days we might have thought everyone would have Jetsons-style flying cars by the time 2021 came around. Truth be told, the Jetson One is heading in the right direction. And we do have vacuum cleaners that we can order around the house.

NASCAR-style D-hole wheels would look right at home on a stock 302 automatic-powered short-bed, further misleading anyone who might think this classic is all show and no go. Blue-dot tail lights pay homage to hot rods of a certain vintage.

This instrument array keeps the driver apprised of vital information, starting with “LP GAS” on the left. Speaking of the left, how often do you see a car with the ignition key left of the steering column? This truck will sell in the No Reserve auction. Is the vanity plate “HITDGAS” available in your State? I could see this ride being a big hit at the sports tailgate with a barbecue grill attachment. What’s your high bid on this supercharged, propane-fueled F100?

As for the LH ign key location I can come up with two very popular vehicles for starters – the 911 + ’64/’65 GTO. Sure there are plenty more. While it may be awkward for those of us using the ‘right’ hand for those 10% ‘leftists’ it will probably come as completely natural though

My 65 GTO had the key on the right side of the wheel. Lots of 60’s FoMoCo were on the left side. Don’t remember many GM’s.

Hank Hill one of the bidders? Pure foolishness on an otherwise decent truck. I hear propane and natural gas prices are going to skyrocket next year making something like this a poor choice.

This truck was built pre-’85 and was an exercise on what one could do with propane power. This isn’t a truck you’re going to daily. I think it’s pretty cool.

I like the truck. As for the skyrocketing
propane prices, all I can say is: “Eat more
    beans! America needs the gas!”

If I got this truck I would get rid of the supercharger that mounts off to the side for one that mounts on top of the engine. Then get rid of the propane stuff and run it off of regular gas.

I would have to get rid of the procharger for a root style supercharger that goes on top of the engine. Then turn it back into a regular gas burning truck and then get a frame to turn the truck into a truck that has a 8 foot bed and change the tail light to regular tail lights.
