Blue Streak: 1973 Pontiac LeMans GT

This 1973 Pontiac LeMans GT is located in Burbank, California. It is listed here on craigslist for sale at an asking price of $10,500. The car has been repainted once and looks to be in very nice shape. The standard transmission on the LeMans GT was a 3-speed automatic transmission and a 4-speed manual transmission was optional. This car looks to be virtually rust free and well optioned. We appreciate Matt R. bringing this car to our attention.

The LeMans is equipped with a white interior with front bucket seats with power windows and power door locks. The automatic transmission is shifted from the column and the dash gauges include a factory tachometer. The Pontiac LeMans is optioned with air conditioning and is said to be in excellent mechanical condition. The car has a new exhaust and a new battery.

The car is said to be equipped with a Pontiac 350 cubic inch V8 engine and 4 barrel carburetor. However, factory literature on the LeMans states that the 350 cubic inch engine was only offered with a 2 barrel carburetor that provided 150 horsepower from the factory in 1973. The optional engines were a 400 cubic inch V8 with two-barrel carburetor (170 horsepower), a 400 cubic inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor (230 horsepower ), and a 455 cubic inch V8 with four-barrel carburetor (250 horsepower ).

The LeMans was redesigned in 1973 to look more like a European Grand Touring car. I think the size of the car exaggerates its lines and takes away the possibility of it be considered a true GT car.  Nonetheless, this is a nice car that I would be proud to own and drive. Who can help us clear up the questions about the engine and carburetor combinations?

I drive it with any of the available power trains and wouldn’t it be something with a Ram Air III or the Ram Air IV? I wouldn’t complain if it had a 455 H.O. under the hood either.

The VIN says 350 2bbl with single exhaust.

It’s nice, but hard to see $10,500, however, if the seller is flexible someone might be able to strike a deal. The GT seems to be little more than a stripe package. The colonnade body cars don’t bring much money, if it was a 400 4spd, that might be a different story.

There is a lot more to the GT package on these cars then stripes. You get the NASA hood which this car doesn’t have. I giy went to see this car & had a PHS done on it & found out this is not a GT car, but just a plain LeMans with a 350 , 4 bbl that would have had to be put on by the owner or someone else who had owned this car in the past. The correct carb should be a 2 bbl , not the 4 bbl. It looks to be a nice car but was told by the 1 who looked at it the paint is a little rough & drab.

Steve R, as far as colonnade body cars not bringing much money, are you familiar with the ’77 Can Am and what they’re bringing? Guess not.

Pontiac was still building excitement, this new body style was what they had to work with, Euro styling or not. Anything could have happened to the dopey 2 barrel carb during forty seven years as well.
I usually jump off ship beyond ’72 yet I find myself attracted to this LeMans,,, I like blue cars and the wheels look sharp. Not as sharp as the 62 Catalina featured earlier though.

Troy, if Pontiac had not been slowed down by the strike in the year before the 73 GTO would have came out in 72 as this was the planned body style for the 72 model year car. I’ve owned mine since new & can tell you I love my car as much now as I did when I bought it new. Although it has a much faster engine in it now, but I did love the power of it when new. No matter if your ever lucky enough to own one you too will fall in love with it as it drives & run great. Also it was named the car of the year in Cars magazine in 73 too. I also out handles ALL GTO’s from the past.

I like these, especially the rear end treatment. This one is almost too nice to cut up, but a nasty Butler engine up front, and huge wheel tubs installed in the rear. would make a wicked looking car from the rear. That massive flat rear end treatment that tapers down at the trailing edge to me would make a really mean looking tubbed car. Trim and tuck the front and rear bumpers, you’d have a pretty much one of a kind hot rod. Since I cant really afford it, maybe I need to scale my plans back, to like 1/24th scale? Guess I’ll have to settle for a plastic car.

There is no reason to tube the rear ends on these cars as you can put as big of a tire as 305/50-15’s on them without tubbing them.

I have a 67 LS powered Cutlass with 315/35/17’s on the rear, still running the original stainless wheel lip trim, so you absolutely can run some serious tires under some cars without tubs. My comment was more for a pro-street type look with something like 31″ or 33″s.

Only 2 barrel on the 350, someone dumped it for some horsepower I’ve had some 73-76 LeMans and 350 2 barrel isn’t a slouch

Not as good looking as a Grand Am but close. Since these were most likely lower in price than the Grand Am, you see more of these today. These are growing on me now but took 45 yrs to get there!

I think this one of the most unique designs Pontiac ever came out with.

Big Mike , if you look at all the cars from 73-77 you will see that they are all shaped like the listed car. Pontiac just had the better styling on theirs then the rest. They also ran better & were the only car in the line that was not able to have the 4 spd. behind the 455 because of the amount of power they made.

I’ve always liked this body style. I worked for a Pontiac dealer in high school and one night was given a new 73 or 74 Grand Am demonstrator for a night to drive in the local parade and then use that evening for a date. If I remember right it had a 400 and 4 speed. That car was FUN. I’ve wanted one ever since.

I like the car. Nitpicking I know, but the photography is poor. Done in bright sunshine so the shadows are terrible, and the backgrounds are cluttered. The car would come across as more attractive just with better pics, well for me it would.

Here’s something ya just don’t see every day!
I am not a huge fan of these colonnade cars, but I don’t hate them by any means. This is one I would definitely want. This is probably my favorite of all the different styles of colonnade bodies. This one looks very clean to boot!

1973 LeMans GT Sport Coupe – that was my first car. Bought it for $800 (my whole Summer wages), it was Burma Brown w/gold stripes. The ‘Sport Coupe” badging on this one can nearly be seen under the GT on the front fender. I think the quarter window louvers and the boat tail really make the car. Mine also had the 350/2 barrel and a dual exhaust w/ glass packs and rear air shocks as part of a towing package. I never towed with it but I could give the car just enough rake to give a nice stance with narrower tires up front (they didn’t call it ‘staggered’ back then). Mine also had a center console and shifter. This one is in great condition for this one-year-only boat tail design, but the $10k ask is a bit high.

This car had to be shot in bright sun light as the paint job is as the guy who went to look at it said it poor. A 350 2 bbl is what comes on these so someone had to change it at one point in it’s life. This car also has a column shift with a black floor console which if you have white interior it would also come with a white floor console, this I know as I have one,, a 73 GTO with a fool shift & console. Now for the big one, this is not a GT as the guy who went to look & possibly buy ordered a PHS for it & it showed it was NOT a GT. The price is to high for the car not being a GT, or a GTO, or a Grand Am either. I would say this will sell at a price of about between 5K & 7 K. It’s not a bad car but it does need work to make it better, but nothing will change the fact that it’s not a GT & someone is trying to sell it as one.

P/W and power door locks but no center console with floor shift? Was it an ordering mistake…seems like it should have one. Probably due to the days before there were tons of ordering “packages.”

I like the body style the only thing I would want to do is tuck those bumpers in closer!! I guess it’s just personal preference but I hate the way they sit so far off the body!! I believe just closing that gap would make the car look much better!!

This car was made for at least 2 years, I had a 74 Sport Coupe same blue color with a white vinyl top, floor shifter auto w 350 which I dumped for a built 400 and turbo 400. It hauled ass !!!

In Canada we had these models from 73 to 77. Last 2 years had 4 rectangular headlights, but basically the same car otherwise. Rarest was the 76 Olympic version. White with red pinstripes and special badging.

Very nice body style, and in 1973, Pontiac finally went with a steel cam gear. Those engines didn’t have the Pontiac timing chain blues. Shut the engine down, and it wouldn’t again until a timing chain and cam gear sprocket was replaced. Other than that the engines were very dependable with proper maintenance.

I had the 73 Lemans sportcoupe gt. It had bucket seats, 3 speed manual, Pontiac 350, 2bbl, rear air shocks. Fun car to drive in 1980. Easily barked the tires in second. Good donut car on a dirt road.
