Blue With A Side Of Dust: 1975 Triumph TR6

“A Triumph for my Triumph!” Does anyone else remember the Midas Muffler ads with the cute brunette on the hood of her TR6 (that I can’t find posted anywhere)? She was leaning on the hood of a car close to this color (Royal Blue rather than Delft Blue, but that’s being picky). extolling the fact that Midas offered exhausts for imports now. I wouldn’t mind being able to lean against the hood of this TR6, which is for sale here on craigslist after 23 years of storage in Lugoff, South Carolina. The asking price is $5,200.

Looking closely at this picture, it’s apparent that this isn’t the original paint, and that some amount of stripping or sanding will have to be done to return this British convertible to it’s former glory. Even though the hood is unlatched you can tell the seam is straight — hopefully this car hasn’t been in an accident. The seller tells us there is “zero rust,” which I would argue is an statistical impossibility on a Triumph, but perhaps this is a pretty solid car.

The blue interior is original as well as being somewhat unusual in the TR6 world, but it’s not rare enough that the car is worth any extra for it. The great thing about Triumphs is that prospective owners are highly supported by both local and national clubs and great parts vendors. If this car truly doesn’t have any rust, you are in pretty good shape! If you go look, check for rust at the trailing arm mounts in the rear first; it’s the most serious place a TR6 can rust.

The air cleaner in the passenger seat tells me someone tried to start this car a while back. It’s hard to spray starting fluid into the carburetors without removing the air cleaners.

That’s 74,323 miles on the odometer, which is probably as accurate as any TR6 odometer is. No overdrive as witnessed by the lack of a second stalk on the left, and the missing light switch is pretty easy to find and inexpensive when you do. Overall this looks like a pretty decent project if you don’t mind the dust — could this Triumph be your Triumph?

Nice car. How about Tawny Kitaen on the hood of some car back in the day…don’t remember the car, too busy looking at Tawny. Ah the 80’s.

Pet peeves: greasy butts on car hoods/trunks/fenders, and aviation ‘experts’ getting their book cover pictures taken while hanging on propellors, and oafs who put briefcases on the roofs of anything belonging to me. My favorite was when a charter customer put his sack of hamburgers on the stab of the newly painted 421. I should have used his Audi for a toilet.

This car deserves an owner who will nurture it back to health. Poor muffin.

Just pull a Spaulding from Caddyshack and puke through the sunroof.

The two rows of drip marks on the trunk and rear valance tell me the roof leaks on occasion. The inverted seat bump on the tonneau looks like it holds water pretty good. The rest of that water ran down on the floors, just enough to keep the worm alive!

Well, there go my dreams of owning a 6 someday. Price is right, no O/D ( deal breaker for me) and going to need LOT’s of tlc, but everything can be gotten, so if O/D isn’t a concern ( it should be) you won’t find one cheaper than this in this condition, I’ve been checking. Some pretty fried 6’s out there for the same money.

And don’t forget British Parts Northwest.
It was always my first choice for parts with my TR6.

      It’s gone already.

I’ve purchased 3 cars that hadn’t been washed for a while prior to purchase. The first thing I did with all of them was give them a good bath. All 3 looked much better when clean and made me feel great about my purchases. That being said it amazes me how many people do nothing to present a car for sale. It also amazes me how people store their cars. They care enough to keep them but don’t care enough to keep them nice. Puzzled TR
