Brambles Find: 1985 Ford Mustang LX

Does it help to be a dreamer when it comes to owning old cars and trucks? I think so, especially if you’re inclined to buying heap-grade examples of rare cars like I do. To me, it’s like waking up every day and telling yourself you’ll some day be a captain of industry – if that’s what helps you stay motivated, go for it. Perhaps that’s the type of individual we’re dealing with here selling a 1985 Ford Mustang LX that’s been gobbled up by the Texas scrub brush. Perhaps as a joke, he’s listed it as a “GT350 R Coupe” and notes it “…would make a slick toy.” Check it out here on Facebook Marketplace and decide for yourself if he’s a master of positive thinking or simply delusional.

I have to believe this listing is intended to poke some self-inflicted jabs at the seller, who realized a six-cylinder (or it may be a four cylinder!) Fox body with an automatic transmission is the kind of car you take straight to the salvage yard when it’s found like this. Of course, there’s endless potential for swapping in a manual, a 5.0L V8, full suspension, etc., but you also have your choice of thousands of Fox bodies with that work already done, or numerous other project-grade examples that already have eight cylinders under the hood and haven’t become one with nature over the last decade.

Oh, you’ll also need to spend some dough on a paint job, because that’s also looking pretty tired, undoubtedly done in by years of the Texas sun beating down on it. Now, listen – I have literally dragged a vehicle out of this exact environment, and realize it’s fairly dumb to do. But that truck was fairly unique for being a rust-free version of a vehicle that has typically disintegrated into a heap of its former self, especially when left in the elements. In other words, I’m not here to judge. But what would be the most logical path forward if you decided that the story is half the fun, and you’d love to look back and know you saved this Mustang from a brambly death?

Aw, look at that sad Fox platform Mustang – it’s practically begging you to rescue it. The seller has tacked a $1,000 asking price on here, which is certainly a fine place to start – but it’s not worth that much as it sits. The vehicles I’ve acquired in this sort of condition typically are free or provided as a form of commission, and I suspect this seller will have to consider the same arrangement, especially if he affords the new owner the privilege of removing it themselves. I don’t know much about the Texas dirt, but do you think this buried Mustang has any floors left? Can – and should – it be saved?

Appears they got the year wrong. Looks like a 87-93 stang.

Absolutely, unless it underwent a conversion at some point in its life, definitely a 87-93 lx from the nose and taillights. The wheels on it look to be from an older fox. Shame seeing one of these in the brush, fortunately its a rarity with the popularity of these cars.

I’m not a Ford Mustang guy, but a lot of retro upgrades on stuff uses the Mustang II front end and the Ford 9″ rear end. Would this car be a candidate donor for those parts?

This one has the 7.5″ rear. Mustang II parts only fit that model from 74-78. Closest to the Pinto of that time. Not too much desirable here, but if it’s not too crusty, it may have a future.

GT 350R ! daggum, been looking for that one for years. It moves 350 CFM through the 2.3L throttle plate !

It’s an ’87-’89 2.3 4 cylinder. Obviously better pictures would be needed to determine condition, but probably fine for the asking price. 1986 and earlier cars had the 4 headlamps and orange/amber tail lights for turn signals.

Why would you waste the space to post something like this?

    “1985 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Coupe 2D”

The owner, if it is the owner publishing this, either doesn’t know what the car is or just made a joke post to see who would respond, and you did.

The car is not a 1985 model, nor is it a Shelby nor is it a GT350R nor is it a coupe.

Incredibly sad someone would park the car like that and abandon it.

I tried saving a 77 Mercury Bobcat once that a guy had parked in the back property of an auction business. He wanted $300, and I offered him $100. He declined, and I left. But the junk yard gave him what he wanted where I found it setting with the rest of their car inventory.
