C2 Cabriolet: 1991 Porsche 911

As someone who owns a very similar car, the 964-chassis Porsche 911 is near and dear. In my biased opinion, this era of air-cooled 911 captures the perfect blend of old and new styling while also being modern enough to drive every day. This era also saw the introduction of all-wheel drive in the 911 lineup, but this is the arguably more desirable 2WD version with the preferred 5-speed manual. The seller is asking a strong price for this Porsche, likely owing to the fact that it has under 40,000 original miles. The 911 is listed here on craigslist for $89,500 in South Burlington, Vermont.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Mitchell G. for the tip. The 964 is an era of 911 that has gone through a dramatic rise in values over the last few years, and unlike some cars that have returned to Earth in the post-pandemic years, the 964 has remained strong. There was a time when you wouldn’t dream of buying a 911 convertible for this kind of money, but due to a variety of factors, the seller is not wrong to ask for nearly $90,000. After years of being near the bottom of the pecking order, the 964 is having its time in the sun, and given how few of them there are compared to the preceding and later years of the 911, it’s not surprising.

One of my bigger gripes with this 911 generation are the seats. They didn’t hold up particularly well from a bolstering perspective, and the power controls are weak at best. The optional sport seats are a huge and worthwhile upgrade for any 964 owner, but if you do find a set, be prepared to spend $4,000 or more. As it relates to the value of this low-mileage 911, the interior photos are doing it no favors. When sellers have cars that don’t present well in certain lights – through no fault of their own – you have to be careful about photos. In this instance, I feel like the seller’s photos fail to convey that this 911 has under 40,000 miles.

That being said, sellers of air-cooled 911s don’t have to work too hard these days to sell their cars. The 964 era in general was already depleted of good examples owing to being considered a throwaway era for many years, coupled with restomod companies like Singer snatching up driver-quality examples in droves. The seller’s car combines the rarity of the era with the preferred combo of rear-wheel drive, a manual, and low miles; throw in the 247 horsepower flat-six with 228 lb.-ft. of torque, and you have all the reasons you need for grabbing a 911 like this for top-down autumn drives.

Being a lifetime Porsche fan (owned 24 of them) I’d say what would hinder the the buyers these days is putting 90K into a 34 year old car. Personally, I think it’s a shame the cars are priced way out of reach of real sports car fans who now have to be satisfied with road cars with fancy graphics.

This 911 is overpriced. I have owned 3 air-cooled 911’s and certainly wish I had kept the last one, not for the “investment” but for driving the best sports cars ever made.

My favorite is the Targa, and I have looked at a few since. I have found great drivers between 45K and 59K. I imagine I will pull the trigger sooner
      or later.

That is 993 money, the best air-cooled overall, imo!

I’ve never lost the image of that C2 that rolled past me on a wet street and how it held the road at that speed with ease. It was a convertible like this one a beautiful gold. If I could afford a 911 it would be a 92 C2 cabrio like this one.
