Cali Barn Find: 1970 Chevrolet Kingswood 350

After an undetermined amount of time in a California barn, this ’70 Chevy Kingswood wagon is up for sale and looks quite promising. Completely original including barn dust, paw prints, and bird droppings, this wagon looks like it would clean up beautifully. Power comes from a 350 V8  that could be hopped up a bit to make this wagon a bit more interesting. This potential hot rod family hauler is listed for $8,500. Take a look at this Kingswood here on craigslist out of Chino, California. Thanks to reader Michael for sharing this rock solid wagon find!

With a few minor issues, the interior has aged nicely and looks like it would clean up very well for the most part. The seat vinyl does appear to show some discoloration, and the steering wheel does have a few cracks. I would completely clean out this wagon and attack it with a vacuum and detailing supplies to see what we are working with. The factory 350 Chevy V8 is in unknown condition, but “everything” is claimed to be correct and matching. Hopefully with some luck, the 350 could be revived and even enjoyed for many miles to come.

Overall the exterior appears very nice with only a few minor concerns to make mention of.  There is some paint chipping on the passenger rear quarter above the body line, but the most curious issue is the bent roof rack rail. You can almost imagine a National Lampoons Christmas like moment where a large Christmas tree was purchased, but the weight was simply too much for the roof rack. The tires are flat, but there is no evidence of rust on this wagon. After a solid clean up inside and out, this wagon would likely need a few weekends of tinkering to get it going once again. Would you invest the time in this Cali barn find?

This will be interesting “need to sell ASAP, I’m asking $8,500”, “don’t waste your time or mine…$ talks, bill of sale”. He talks about wasting his time, he must be busy since he couldn’t be bothered to even hose off the car or open the hood. I try not to think this way, but he deserves every lowball offer coming his way. I also suspect he will be a pleasure to deal with, good luck to him and potential buyers.

The car might have potential, it’s hard to say. Based on the ad and the claim of being sold with only a bill of sale, 1/3 the asking price is probably about right.

Only 4 pics in ad. No interior, under hood or underside pics. Price way too aggressive. Just how gullible are we?

“Don’t waste my time” or similar language has become all the rage in online ads, but you can’t really fault sellers for it. Place an ad on CL, and you have painted a target on your back for legions of crooks and scammers– all of whom want to waste your time and steal from you. It’s difficult to imagine that they succeed in their scams very often, but they must have occasional success or they wouldn’t be so prolific.
It is just as bad with fraudulent sellers, but they are quite easy to spot. I gleefully flag their ads every time I come across them.

It looks like this time the seller would be the one to look out for.

First the car is not running. Second even though the listing says clean title, the text says bill of sale.

Then we have the price for this non running car.

      People are crazy.

I will predict this ad will not be taken down quickly due to a fast sale.

I have a 1969 Kingswood but I have no delusions that it is a high dollar car.

Nice wagon. Alll the comments hit the nail on the head. Wash it, pump the tires up.show the mill and vacuum it out. The guy doesn’t get the fact that a couple hours work would make all the difference.
My dad had wagons and I did also. Loved em. this one would be very cool to have and carry my junk around!!

Good luck to the new owner!!

The ad said this car was consigned to him, so I doubt he will be lifting a finger to do anything here.

Flippers use different excuses to explain why the name on the title doesn’t match theirs, I’ve read or heard it’s a friends, grandparents, parents, the owner moved or is sick, consignment is new. In every instance it means is a buyer is in their own if things go south at the DMV for any reason.

I agree with everyone’s comments. The seller needs to show us that it’s worth the asking price. I looked it up on NADA and surprisingly it is priced about $2,000 below the low end in the southern California market. My question is, how hard would it be to open the hood and hook up a socket to a long extension and then to the harmonic balancer to check if the engine is stuck? Or to take an after photo after washing off all the dirt to see if the paint still shines? Lazy on the seller’s part. Nobody is going to fork over $8,500 if you’re not willing to put some effort into it.

Besides all that, I want to know more about that 1960 Ford Starliner next to it!

I think that he wants $20,000 for it,
but don’t waste his time with a lowball offer.

Sorry, No way this is even worth more than a couple of grand and that would need the engine to be running at minimum. I guess that any state that has easy access to marijuana has become not so hot a hunting ground for old iron
    😁😛

Another one who thinks it’s worth it’s weight in gold, even though he couldn’t be bothered to make any effort whatsoever to make it presentable and take more and better pictures. Everyone above is right, it’ll sit and collect dust and deteriorate further while he gets increasingly insulted by “lowball” (meaning much more realistic) offers.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I’m betting that the BF commenters are exactly the people that this seller doesn’t want to deal with, and I’m not too sure you can blame him.

He’s priced the car halfway between Hagerty #3 and #4 but most of the comments here (as usual) are outraged as if he were asking the moon for it: “$500 take it or leave it” “…delusions that it’s a high-dollar car”. Seriously? $8500 is a high dollar car? What decade are you guys living in?

He also says that the car is getting new tires and being tuned and detailed, (although that may have been added to the ad later). The biggest problem with this apparently solid old wagon is the lack of title. But it looks like a pretty good feature car for a site called, ahem, Barn Finds.

He also says that the car is getting new tires and being tuned and detailed, (although that may have been added to the ad later)………………the seller also says that it has a clean title and then later says it comes with a bill of sale. Why not actually do what he says he is going to do and then list it for sale? The way this car is currently is about a 2 grand car max.

I don’t trust Hagerty’s price guide. Same for NADA. When I see either of those referenced in an ad it’s often for a car that doesn’t stand on its own merits.

$8,500 is outrageous for this wagon that needs restoration.

Not outrageous when compared to what is being paid for many company’s old rusted out non running piles.Yet even in very presentable decent interior and repaint with rebuilt engine, trannt??? For at least double the original cost, one would be hard pressed as to gain a decent return.
Surprisingly at many a used car lot older decent wagons sell readily to young family.
Compare to cost of new egg crates, and there is no stigma upon owners with presentable mild custom owners, on the cruise or shows.
A commission sale can wait, they pay no Inventory as or finance charges as they do their own lot autos.
New car dealers sell these old autos at gypsy lot sales usually in lots of 5, a decent 7O wagon, any make is a quick turnaround in the demographics they sell to, while other 4 are also within same darn near price range.
At gypsy sale figure 500 – 2500 bucks your cost with around same amount of profit at sale.
Auctions have to price high as their listing and com.ision at sale is their profit.
As with this dude, he is not out one red cent and his profit will be lower % than auction house; he has just listed “reserve price openly.
AND he doesn’t have to present a clean auto, after all barn finds must look like a dirty barnyard special.

Take it or leave it? He’s gonna have this car for a long time to come.
Sorry folks, I’m walking away from this one. While I don’t know if you
can still get one of these for $500, you can still find one cheaper than
what this gentleman is asking for his. Must be some good smoke
he has there. Too bad he’s letting it cloud his judgement.

Nice wagon, looks like it would be fun to bring back to life and fun to cruise in, but not at that price. I encountered a seller like that a couple years ago by Clearlake, CA. Wouldn’t answer the most simple questions even though his ad had very little info on his collection of basketcases in the first place. Couldn’t even find out if it had a clear title “Because stupid costs extra” after a little back and forth the price went up and I told him to go to an un-holy place. Heard he’s only gotten rid of one shell after all this time, and at the expensive price of admission of a ’07+ Cadillac Escalade and cash on top I can see why. And old heads wonder why kids my age would rather buy a cheap ’93 civic than look into something classic…
